Well i use a 19" moniter and use 1024x768 with a refresh of eather 75 or 85 depends on if i play around or not can't really tell the difference personally. Also my moniter doesn't even allow me to go below 800x600 and 16 bit color.

To figure out what yours is right click your desk top select properties, settings, advanced, and in XP then select Monitor. Do not set the refresh rate higher than your moniotr is desigend for though as you can burn out the monitor. anything above 70 should be good enough to reduce eyestrain and headaches. The refresh rate of screens is a particular bugbear of mine. The IT dept where I work never seems to check the refresh rate of the monitors they set up. The result is that they run at 60hz and under artificial light, especially fluorescents, this is just plain bad for the eyes. I can immediately tell from glancing at someones monitor whether it has the dreaded 60hz setup and immediately change it to 75hz (thereby earning the undying emnity of my IT colleagues )
At home I run 1024 x 768 @ 85hz on a Philips 17" monitor powered by a 128meg Geforce 4 Ti4200 [ 10-10-2002, 04:31 PM: Message edited by: Mouse ]

Sorry if I sound thick when it comes to computers, but what does "refresh rate" refer to?

1280*1024 works best for me. Especially with big icons so the text becomes somewhat normal. I use 85Hz on my monitor at this moment. Just a question on the Hz topic. What´s the frequency of a lamp? They flicker as well do to the AC. Anyone know?
