Funny I always take Viconia no matter what. And I only took the Jaheira this time for the romance, and I thing my oppinion is changing a bit, but in the long run she sucks compared to Viconia in both combat and spell casting, Cern'd however has the greater werewolf thing wich is very COOL.

Jaheira over Cernd. Cernd is a lousy fighter, Jaheira can stand up for herself when attacked.
Cernd dies too easily.

Jaheira sucks compared to Viconia in combat?
Spellcasting, I could understand with Viconia's faster advancement. But Combat? At level 9 Jaheira has better combat skills than Viconia could possess before the completion of the game when you consider weapon proficiencies and a fighter's THACO... Furthrmore, nearly any item that could be used to enhance Viconia's effectiveness could also be used by Jaheira.

but you can use Righteous Magic/Draw upon holy might/... to enhance Viconia's combat stats. And equipped with Crom Faeyr she rocks. The main drawback with Jaheira is, that she can use almost no decent weapon (Spear, Scimitar and clubs leave only the Impaler as a real choice).
However Jaheira is still better than Cernd. He is a sissy, can't wear armor and even as a greater werewolf he is a bad fighter. Oh...and I hate his child and his quest!!

I like Viconia, but I also think Jaheira is a better fighter.
You forgot to say she can use quarterstaff. The staff of the Ryn is very good, and there are also other good staff to be found in the game. She also has access to some very powerfull druid spell, and if it was not enough, she can cast iron skin, making her an Ubber Tank. She also has a lot more health.

And fighter THACO. Give her a staff or impaler and a girdle and she's still as effective as a CF wielding Viconia.
IMHO Jaheira is one of the games overall best NPCs.

Every time I start a new run through BG2 I mean to replace Jaheira with Cernd... and I never can bring myself to dump her. IMHO she's one of the most well-rounded NPC's in the game. A fighter's THACO with spellcasting ability is tough to beat.
Spoilers below... . . . . . I still recall the fight in the underdark vs. the Illithid in my first run through BG2: My PC (human sorcerer) was stunned. Anomen, Keldorn and Minsc were all killed, and Jan was confused and just ran around the room. In the end it was Jaheira against 4 of them, and one by one she picked them off. I was on the verge of reloading the game, figuring that the odds were too much for her to overcome and she'd die... but somehow she survived and kicked butt. That really impressed me and I've been a Jaheira supporter ever since. One of these days I will try Cernd just as a change of pace. I'd like to see what a Master Druid can do and Cernd will hit that point much faster, being a single-classed character. But that group will have a few strong fighters to offset Cernd's weakness offensively. |

I gave Jaheira a "vacation" for a quest or two while using Cernd. He wasn't bad, but nothing to write home about.
