This style is reminiscent of the "Debating Forum" where this is done quite a lot.

Actually I've found serious debaters benerally present unified arguments, moving to splits to emphasise certain elements.

Quoting the paragraph and then responding in one section seems to flow better and is easier on the eyes when different colors are used.

Agreed. Flow is wierd otherwise

This seems to happen more on serious, hotly contested topics and not on the fun ones, of course.

and everything was nice and orderly. The only problem a person could nit-pick about is that you quoted some things that you didn't need to since you made no real comment on them.

I suppose of someone really didn't want you to examine their statemnets that closely and wanted to be able to just slip some non-factual or incorrect arguments in....it could be annoying to them...

Oh, I dunno, there may be some people on Ironworks who would fit the description of troglodyte. Although, as you say, that's more content than computer knowledge.
