Okay, I found this book of infinite spells and put it in the quick-item slot for Aire. It says the first spell is a fireball. When I tried to use it against those shadow thingies, I got the message that the item was drained, but no fireball! Left Aire standing with nothing but a sling and they ate her up in a hurry. I've tried several different ways to get this to work, but always a dud. What's the deal here?

The book was on the island (Brynwood?). I think Perth had it.

The most powefull spells I found in the book of infinite spells, after turning page after page, were Wyvern Call (lvl 6) and some 7th lvl protection spell (protection from the elements or spell turning I think). Has anyone found any more powefull spells in there?

No, spell turning (lvl 7) is the best spell you can aquire.
If you want to turn the page, place it in your inventory, left-click on the book, select "turn page" and place it in your quik item slot. To USE the spell you've selected, click on the "spell" option, when clicking it in the inverntory and then place it in your quik itme slot. Hope it helps

I had the same problem as riverman. Found out you actually have to point the fireball over an enemy target (in red). This is unlike the normal fireball spell which you can land anyway.
