Sweeney Among the Nightingales
Apeneck Sweeney spreads his knees Letting his arms hang down to laugh, The zebra stripes along his jaw Swelling to maculate giraffe. The circles of the stormy moon Slide westward toward the River Plate, Death and the Raven drift above And Sweeney guards the horne'd gate. Gloomy Orion and the Dog Are veiled; and hushed the shrunken seas; The person in the Spanish cape Tries to sit on Sweeney's knees Slips and pulls the table cloth Overturns a coffee cup, Reorganised upon the floor She yawns and draws a stocking up; The silent man in mocha brown Sprawl at the window-sill and gapes; The waiter brings in oranges Bananas figs and hothouse grapes; The silent vertebrate in brown Contracts and concentrates, withdraws; Rachel nee' Rabinovich Tears at the grapes with murderous paws; She and the lady in the cape Are suspect, thought to be in league; Therefore the man with heavy eyes Declines the gambit, shows fatigue, Leaves the room and reappears Outside the window, leaning in, Branches of wisteria Circumscribe a golden grin; The host with someone indistinct Converses at the door apart, The nightingales are singing near The Convent of the Sacred Heart, And sang within the bloody wood When Agamnemnon cried aloud And let their liquid siftings fall To stain the stiff dishonored shroud. T.S. Eliot I've always loved this for its almost palpable air of menace, conspiracy, and scabrous decadence. [ 02-16-2002: Message edited by: Galadria ]

quote: Ok... hows this one ?? Farewell we call to hearth and hall, Though wind may blow and rain may fall, we must away ere break of day, Far over wood, and mountain tall To Rivendell where elves yet dwell, in glades beneath the misty fell, Through moor an waste we ride in haste, and whither then we cannot tell With foes ahead, behind us dread, Beneath the sky shall be our bed, Until at last, out toil be past, Our journey done, our errand sped. -- JRR Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring EDITSpelling error... not like i get them alot!! This one is my favorite...and ture..
The Road goes ever on and on Down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it with eager feet, Until it joins some larger way Where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say. -JRR Tolkein

You know I used to think the most Famous Poet was Anon because he appeared in so many poety books. You can imagine my embarrasment after talking about this poet to a teacher at school(Why did no one ever tell me, lol)

quote: LMAO!!! I used to think Anonymous was a poet too. No, Lennon, it's eager feet...I have the book here. EDIT: When Bilbo first says it, it is 'eager feet'. When Frodo later says it, it is 'weary feet.' Thanks for catching me on that. [ 02-16-2002: Message edited by: Lioness ]

It's 3:30 in the morning. Time for something out of my own head. OK, it doesn't rhyme, but if that's a problem, please send packets of coffee to this address...
The form of Princess, radiant but ragged, nothing but a mask for the thing within. 'No cries of hate for me from thee?' it yelled, a study in plaintive menace A bloody grin clenched upon its' stolen face. 'And why should thee be worthy of hate, especially my own?' said Knight, his hand clenched around his golden blade. 'You should hate me,' quoth Demon, truthful. 'I slaughtered the brave five thousand years before thy paltry birth. But, if thy wish is to be specific...' and with sudden wrench Demon left; Princess returned. Her body held still - her face her own twisted in a scream of pain, as Demon pulled at the soul it fed upon, crowing to every pain-filled note she cried. Knight stunned, blinded by sudden grief and guilt as it returned, words of scorn upon borrowed lips, 'Dost thou know how much sweeter souls become, dear Knight, when they are devoured in the pairs the gods ordaineth they shall be?'
