Personally, as a non smoker, I think a public smoking ban is unnecessary in the majority of cases, with perhaps the exception of certain hospitality industries.

You walk into a bar, sit down, order a drink and light up a cigarette. Okay, you're an adult, you know what smoking does to you and it's your choice. Unfortunately your waitress doesn't have that choice and is forced to inhale second hand smoke. That isn't fair.

Here in BC, WCB attempted to institute a smoking ban in late 2001, early 2002, but it didn't last long. It's interesting to note that the majority supported such legislation. http://www.cleanaircoalitionbc.com/N...000AngReid.pdf

I choose not to smoke, and I also choose not to frequent establishments that allow smoking. That's my choice to do so, but I don't need legislation to tell me that. I will simply not support those business that allow smoking with my money.
Doesn't that waiteress have the choice to accept the job or not at a business where it is common knowledge that smoking goes on? Is not the waiteress also an adult? I know in the state of Alabama you MUST be 21 to work in a bar, I'll bet you every other state in the Union has the same type of laws.

You are correct to make the choice not or to go any business that alows smoking. That's the key personal responsability, but the anit-smoking nazi's want to make the choice for you, Oh they'll be the first to piss'n'moun if they were forced to make a choice differant then they wanted to make.

For all the STOP POLUTING MY AIR Crowd: IT'S MY AIR ALSO stop poluting my air with the sound waves eminating from you. Those sound waves CAUSE a rise in blood pressure and can lead to a heart attack in someone my age. Unless you have some moral superiority. ie: think you're better then anyone else, in which case I'll have to see the documentation that leads you to believe that.

Guess what? If you wish for me to abide by your wishes and wants do the same for me.

The word is... if you want to ruin your health, don't take down others with you.

As far as sound waves go, we all emit them. It's not like there are some humans that do, and some that don't. You move, you make noise. You breathe you make noise.

Whether the soundwaves of another raises ones stress level is also dependent on THE LISTENER. The listener has the power to choose response. Chooses to react and chooses to let something bother them.

You will never make me angry. I will always only choose be angry at what you've done.

Smoke on the other hand will harm my health whether I choose to respond or not.

Also, by declaring that the waitress has the choice you're ignoring that now the smoker has the choice. You can always walk outside and have a cig. A one minute stroll. That means that the waitress doesn't have to choose between eating, or breathing cleaner air.

[/QUOTE]Yorick, the fact of business is: You have to keep the customer happy or they don't buy your product or service, period! And I'm Not ingoring the fact the customer can walk out I'm just not putting the empolyee before the customer that buys the product or service that pays the business which alows the business to pay their employees.

No it is not a freer country, you think it is because your side has FORCED others to nolonger have the choice of doing something you disagree with. How the "Hale" would you "feel" if the shoe was on the other foot.

If you choose not to respond you still have made a choice. You are ingoring (using your logic) that you have the choice to remove yourself from the enviroment where there is smoking. but prehaps that doesn't work both ways Hmmm?

I smoke, cheap foul smelling cigars, if you don't like it don't come to my house. I smoke at work if you don't like it don't patronize my business. But It WILL be a cold day in "Hale" before I'm forced to stop, they'll plant my red-neck rear end in the ground before I'm forced to doing anything I don't want to do.

That is it John. When a percieved side win's they see it as right. They don't look at the big picture. All they can focus on is this little narrow vision.

Higher living someone said? is that right? How do you define that? just money right? Why is it cancer is now a normal thing? Have you had the chance to breath in country air and city air? Try it sometime.

Smoking today and who know's what else tommorow. I still stand by my point. Bar's need to be closed because they put me and every sober driver in danger. I could paste enough studies to have you reading all year if you want. Bars fill people up and send them on their way.

Since people no longer have freedom or braincells we need to stop all fast food. People are now to stupid to choose what to eat and where at.

No more big trucks or suvs at all unless you get a permit. They fill MY air with more and more toxin making breathing a chore. In 10 years I will need a gas mask just to walk in a city.

No guns at all. People are to stupid. They put innocent people in danger.

No smoking at all in public because some people have asthma.

No loud music because as John pointed out they put everyone in danger.

here here, I agree with you, everyone has a choice, if you do not like smoke GO WHERE IT IS SMOKE FREE!!!!.i have tried saying this nicely, but not one person has heard, if this is truly a free country, the what you are proposing is communisom, taking away smokers right to freedom, this is getting out of hand people, there are worse things in the world than someone who smokes...like someone who kills for the fun of it, or someone who beats their wife, husband or child because they can, and uncureable diseases are alot worse than what i do with MY money, I try not to smoke around my kids, because they are to young to understand the concept that smoking is a choice not something that you have to do, i choose to smoke, and i enjoy it

Communism? Come on! That is ridiculous. I hope you try to not smoke around your children because it is unhealthy for them. Statistics show that children raised around cigarette smoke are sick more, have more lung infections and ear infections. I am a prime example. Two parents who smoked like chimneys: chronic lung problems and so many ear infections that they thought at one point I might lose my hearing. Bottom line: your children do NOT have a choice whether or not to breathe your second-hand smoke.

No-one's forcing you to stop smoking. What are you talking about John?

The law is catching up with smoking in public places. Places where nonsmokers have had to endure smokers inconsideration for years now.

Planes, trains, and now bars are gradually becoming places where those of us ALERGIC to tobacco, no longer have to avoid, or endure smoke under duress. Why should I have to give up singing in public because people don't have the courtesy to not smoke around non smokers?

Most smokers just don't give a shyt. I've seen smokers blow smoke over people (who don't have a cigarette) like they hold them in disdain, Which they don't. Many don't ask. I am so appreciative when a smoker ASKS if I mind if they smoke near me. Frighteningly rare though.

So now, finally smokers are forced to be considerate of others. If you want a cig, smoke at home, outside, in private, just not around nonsmokers or in public places where your choice to smoke overrides the nonsmokers choice not to.

Not in New York City. Cabs and subways are the way home.
