Uh sorry, but I couldn't help giggling at the vision of using an armored vehicle to crush bread loaves and wine bottles. [img]smile.gif[/img]

I suggest avoiding trampling Red Bordeaux 2000 bottles - it would be a great shame, really, 2000 is said by all experts to be an exceptional vintage for Red Bordeaux, and having tasted some myself, I can assure you they say the absolute truth. [img]smile.gif[/img] Send them to me instead !

Some Americans disapprove of the French point of view, so aren't they able to protest in a manner which they see as appropriate?

Breaking bottles of wine, publicly pouring wine into the sewers, or changing the name of French Fries to Freedom Fries isn't anymore pathetic than marching for peace with American flags marked with dollar signs, burning American flags or effigies of Bush, etc.

Strange that a non violent American protest would be so disparaged here where people are usually so pro-protesting.

I didn't find this article while looking for sites about Iraq - I found it while looking for sites about wine. [img]smile.gif[/img] Luc and I went to a wine fair to taste and buy bottles for our wine cellar - and I was looking about information on the best vintages to buy to build a really good cellar.

I agree with you, Ronn, burning Chirac's or Bush's photos or flags is somewhat ridiculous - but trampling bread and wine is IMO a step further in absurdity - and what really had me laugh was the mention of using an armored car to do it.

I also wanted to share with you a genuine advice to get Red Bordeaux 2000. Yumm ! [img]smile.gif[/img]

Moiraine, your post was in good humor, but the following remark calling this form of protest pathetic was not.

I don't see pouring out wine in protest as being absurd at all. In fact I easily find burning pictures and flags as the more ridiculous of the two. This economic and symbolic protest hopes to send a message both at home and abroad. The burning of photos and flags appears to be quite violent for those who are only interested in peace.

This non violent action is taken by individual citizens and businesses who believe enough in this cause to throw away valuable merchandise. That money comes directly out of the business' pocket. If it means enough to these people to speak out, then I say more power to them. I don't want to see them burning Chirac's picture or the French flag, so I think this is pretty appropriate.

Now the armored vehicle running over wine and bread was ridiculous, but it was done as a gag for a morning radio show and was meant to be "over the top". The individual protests are quite a bit different.

We've had one of those kind of protest in Denmark too. A pizza-place in a tourist resort have banned Frenchmen and Germans from his restaurant

Ooh, that's bad. I mean, destroying wine, and burning photos and stuff, okay, I understand that. But banning people from a restaurant because of their nationality is a crime. It's discrimination, and the restaurant should be closed down. That's what I think.

Incidentally, I think Spanish wine is much tastier than French, actually so is Californian.
