Hmm. I don`t understand why "people" say that games are bad for children. That they can make a person go beserek and kill people. And they start:
You know the Korean guy? He died becuase of playing CS. But hello! He played nearly three days without stoping. Without food, without anything. He want to the bathroom something like 2 times...
And then scientits do "tests":they put two type of kids in a room.
One type gets mindless shooting game a la Postal II and the other kids get something like Math tests. And then the scientists mesure brain activity and find out that the group with Math tests has more brain activity. Wow you really need to be a Doctor to find that out.

But then again TV also has the similar effect. Almost every day you can see movies with killing, shooting, and bad behaviour and they say nothing about it. TV can "feed" you with whatever it wants...

My thoughts were told...

Because society wants something to blame kids behaviour on, and computer games are an easy target. Players are still a minority, its still new, a lot of people only know about the games that make it onto TV which are always the nasties like DooM or GTA or Postal.

Its a lot more comfortable for parents to say computer games are making their kids into little monsters that it is for them to admit that just maybe there parenting technique isnt up to scratch.

And they say that for *all* games. But games like BG series where you actually need to use your brain(!) are not so known to society. I have many friends who say that BG sucks becuase you play it with Mouse(!) and there is not shooting involved and they never heard of the game.

The people I know who don't approve of computer games simply state: "Computer games are dumb". Period.

They put it on par with watching tv-series. (as opposed to watching documentaries or the news)

I often get the feeling they just say it is dumb because they don't understand it AT ALL. And a (rudely and literally translated) dutch proverb says: unknown is unloved.

i think this shows the point quite nicely:

http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php...03-08-11&res=l

pairants blame games for messing up kids. the problem is the games they blame are all intended for adults. how did their kids even get those games?
as i understand it there is still no proof whatsoever that games can screw you up like the pairants say.

personally, i think statements that people say that 'games makes people stupid' or 'playing games is a waste of time' really bothers my mind.researches had found that games don't do that kind of thing, but it one condition : control your time.instead, it stimulates the brain, and improves your reflex movements.it also gives u the advantage to make u a more competitive person.it also practices u to make a right decision in a slight of time.well, i think, games has many advantages, but that doesn't mean that games do not give u disadvantages.of course it does, but rather minor.but i do agree that u have to control the time of playing games.Long Live Gamers!!!

Games have nothing to do with a person's own actions, it doesn't even motivate them in violent directions. I've heard lawyers debating on whether all games are bad, that they are all violent to some degree, no kidding? The inevitable "violence" is the conflict in the games that make it interesting, with no conflict the game isn't even worth playing. I've been playing games ever since I was 2 years old. played D&D since I was 10, and I never have had violent ideas from them.

When kids do what they do, the only reason people blame games for it is because the parents won't accept that maybe they screwed up along the road.

Heh, i also played Doom or let`s say Quake but didn`t get want-to-kill-now-becuase-i-play-a-shooting-game syndrom...

Science is good, but in this case science or parents for that matter really don`t kow nothing.

Even Prince Charles said the games are making kids stupid. I guess he didn`t heard for BG or Indiana Jones or whatever that involves a little more thinkhing then holding your finger on the mouse button.

Well some people get so caught up in the game that it clouds their actions. I remember vaguely the story of a guy who got murdered after he beat someone at a CS tournament. Maybe if he wasn't playing that game, he would have been fine. It all depends on different types of people. Most people know it's a game and won't do anything stupid because of it but there's still the small amount of people who are too much into the game to behave normally.

In order for video games to affect your psyche, you need to have pre-existing issues. I have played:
  • GTA: Vice City, and I have never carjacked anyone
  • Baldur's Gate 2, and I don't have a compulsion to stab anyone
  • Ghost Recon, and I don't feel the urge to shoot anyone
The list can go on and on. In many Western cultures, most notably the US and Canada, a lot of people put their kids on "cruise control" parenting. If your child has pre-existing mental problems, what are they doing with these games? The parents have to step in. The games aren't going to go away: society just needs to smarten up about them, and their appropriateness. If games were treated the same way as movies, we wouldn't be having these debates.
