Re: 5.9 mag Quake in WASHINGTON DC!?!?!?!
My work building SHOOK for a good 30 seconds. First earthquake for us so everyone was freaking out. They ended up evacuating our building to check for structural damage so we all left early. Scared the crap out of me because everything in the office was shaking, including the entire building and we all just wanted to get the hell out. So now I can say I know what an earthquake feels like. Scary in a highrise building. I hope any aftershocks we get are mild and not noticeable!

Re: 5.9 mag Quake in WASHINGTON DC!?!?!?!
I was training my new hire at his home in Greensboro, NC when the typical rocking back and forth and low rumble started. We stopped and looked at each other and then ran outside to see what was going on because I thought a truck had crashed on the street nearby or something blew up. I'd only experienced something like that once, and that was when a furniture factory near my house in Lenoir blew up many years ago and shook the whole town. Only after we thought about it a while did we actually realize it was an earthquake but both were skeptical until the internet confirmed it. I tried making a call on my Verizon phone and could not. I was able to send email to my team warning them that the phones were down and not to waste time trying for a while. The high call volume disrupted service. When it was possible, my mom called and told me she'd felt it in Caldwell County nearly two hours away to the West. I had one employee in Roanoke Rapids (near the VA border on the Richmond side) say he was in a mobile home with his customer when the thing hit good and hard for them. Strangely enough, not everyone felt it. My wife knew nothing about it in Apex, though just 30 minutes North of us in Durham, I had a guy report on feeling it real good. Another of my guys in Wilson, just 1 hour East did not feel it either and he was closer than I was geographically. Makes me think it was only really felt on the Western part of NC although Richmond is North of the Eastern part of NC! I guess the quake went in a South-Western angle or something.
Glad to know you're okay LadyZ.
