My paladin candidate is lost in the woods NW of the Gipsies, looking for the Statue. I'm sure that if it were daylight the statue would be obvious, but it is night, and neither torches nor torchlight spells seem to work very well. Can any one give me a hand?

It is in the farthest NW area you can go on that part of the map...you may need to trek west a bit to find the path that leads into it.
You should be able to see it at night (not guaranteeing this)...check your map for unexplored areas where you are.  Moni |

Welcome to the board Thamrys!!!!
Turn up the game GAMMA - (computer options menu, graphics screen) that might help! You are in a tricky area - you need to go west - west and then north to find the statue - I've gotten lost in this area myself even after I've had it mapped! lol!! (I know Moni is already replying to you too!) You might consider just wandering around the shore of the lake and fighting monsters until daylight comes - good EX if nothing else!
