Just BTW, MagiK, I think humankind is FAR from inventing a cure for the common cold. If some animals managed to come up with it I'd be impressed... and grateful *achoo*. I would post quite a bit on the fact that apes are actually quite intelligent, but as you seem to have discounted such arguments already, I'll spend my time posting to more open ears.

uhhh Kaz...I never mentioned a cure for the common cold.......I said "a passable treatment" If you haven't tried it yet, try Pseudofed or actifed
while not cures...they are passable treatments.

And as for apes being intelligent, so are my dogs, and whales and a lot of other things...intelligence is NOT the same as sentient.

The diversity is so vast...the local coffee shops brim with people from artists to stockbrokers, students to musicians. The city is alive with culture, ever changing. When I go to the suburbs I get a severe case of depression. Things are so drab...all the houses are the same, the same resteraunts, the same shopping centers...minivans and children...no diversity, no culture.
Yup! I like visiting city centres sometimes for all those things too - I would just hate to LIVE there in all that noise and bustle and fume! I live on the edge of a city within easy walking distance of countryside. I like it that way.

Sentient: that feels or is capable of feeling. (Oxford English Dictionary)
Intelligence: quickness of understanding. (Oxford English Dictionary)

Not the same, no. So, you are saying apes, dogs and whales are intelligent but humans are only capable of feeling?! ROFLMAO!

Flot. Yes I am saying that only humans have the quality that is known as sentience. In the definition the word "feeling" is open for interpretation. Obviously animals feel pain and that kind of feeling, and yes in certain ways animals can show "loyalty" to a master. But you will never prove to me an animal incapable of controlling its own environment to any real degree is sentient. NOTE: this is JUST my opinion. But I ask you. If you had to choose between saving your daughters life (if you had one I don't know you so I don't know) or killing ohhhh say 10,000 of what ever "feeling" animals you can think of...which would you choose? I would choose YOUR daughter every time and I don't even know if she exisits.

But that just reinforces the idea that we are not that much different from animals. Any animal would choose to kill another species in protection of their offspring. That is animal nature!

What difference have humans made on the planet? Is Earth still nothing more than a useless ball of rock? And the statement that without US they are important to no one...what is that all about. You don't think that they are important to each other? It is clearer to say that they are NOT important to us, b/c it is us that are so blatant about killing them off!
