It's difficult to say what's popular in any country as a general rule - I suspect there's a wide range of tastes most places.

I couldn't even tell you what's in the charts at the moment, I never listen to the radio. And myself, I'm into old metal (Maiden, Sabbath, Judas Priest, Rainbow, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, old Metallica etc. etc.)

I know. Just trust me when I tell you you're not missing much.
As for me... I stopped listening to the radio as well. All I do is download some songs from the playlists of the few radio programs that are worth the time. That doesn't mean I only listen to incredibly complex music, mind you... I just try to listen to good music, don't care much about what genre it represents then. There's hiphop (Mos Def, Blackalicious), Indierock (Pavement, Seafood), Emo (and you will know us by the trail of dead, Sunny Day Real Estate, Fugazi, At the Drive-in, My Vitriol), Stonerrock (Queens of the Stone Age), Singer-song writers (Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann), Quality pop (PJ Harvey, Goldfrapp, Motorpsycho), progrock (Sigur Ros), Indiepop (Sparklehorse, Pinback, Maestro Echoplex), Noise (Sonic Youth), Experimental (Notwist, Fireside), Dance (Bran Van 3000), Avantgarde (Einstürzende Neubauten, Godspeed You Black Emperor!) and many, many others I'm probably forgetting. About the only well known artists I listen to are R.E.M., Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead.
But to classify my taste with only one term? Impossible. Unless you count "weird".
