I was looking through 3rd Edition.
Is Gold Dragon Great Wyrm the hardest? It has a CR of 26!
Why is Demogorgan not in there and Elminster. I suppose they are individual char... but where can I find their stats?
Also these Nightcrawlers seem quite tough! With Cr in 18 or 19!
Also, it seems the Demons (Tannarii) are much more deadly than Devils (Batezzu).
Why is this?

Not in 3rd Edition! Red Dragons come 3rd After Gold Dragons. Titans also come close. They seem quite weak to me! Solars come after Titans! **GASP**

I've seen challenge ratings as high as 45...Demogorgon for example. Try http://www.creaturecatalog.com for 200 or so conversions of monsters to 3E rules

What happened to the big dinosaur monster, what's it bloody called..........it's a unique creature in 2nd edition and was responsible for kicking my party's arse on more than one occasion (we ran away twice and finally got it-with four out of six dead on the third attempt).

Its on the tip of my tongue .... I think it began with a T

IT WAS A TRASQUE. (sp?)

Got there in the end.

The challenge ratings can be altered by the situations as well. The addition of bad terrain or other items to make the fight more difficult for the characters can greatly effect the CR for any monster. I have encountered a Great Red Wyrm and I will tell you it is not fun.

The demons are more powerful, but because of their chaotic nature they are less effective in the Blood War than are the Devils who are very disciplined and act in concert.

Elminster and Demogorgon are unique characters. Elminster should not have CR since he is basically on the characters side and a motivator.

2nd edition AD&D didn't have CR's. They simply had experiance points for each creature and you added them together.

I AM REALLY CONFUSED!

If 2nd Edition didn't have a CR, then why does my monster manual only have CRs going upto 26?? When clearly many monsters have CR in the 40s.

Oh Tuor: It is a Tarasque . It has a CR of 18 ish and it has size collossal. It is the oNLY one alive.

Personally I find the CR business in 3E a little confusing. I haven't run any of it yet, but I do play every thursday evening.

I will talk to my friend who has written freelance for TSR/Wizards and see what he says about the CR's then get back to you.
