3rd Edition Players Handbook is all you need, unless you plan on becoming a DM. In which case you should buy a Dungeon Masters Guide and the Monter Manual. The Character Sheets sold in stores are nice but not a necessity.

These books are 20 to 35 US dollars each.

you can find really good once on the web too
WotC has 3 sheets 2 of them really good
one is 4 pages
the other is 6
check them out

The main thing is partners.

I have way too many D&D books based on how often I played. Out of a group of 5 players we could get together maybe twice a year I probably have 15 hardback books, and several of the softbacks, like fighters handbook, pysonics, etc...

I also had the first 3 training boxed sets, these aren't necessary, as pointed out, but if you're just starting, they do break it down to a much simpler level. Not too much to deal with at once. If you're going to have people new to gaming playing with you and you'll end up being the DM, it might not be a bad investment, but if you play with someone experienced you don't.

It would be cool if there was a way to play P&P D&D online.

there are a few sites i've heard of that do offer it, but the rules system was rather buggy and almost impossible for me to get working on my computer...

Does everyone here play 3rd edition? Is noone playing 2nd edition any more? From what I've seen of 3rd edition so far I prefer 2nd edition.

Neb, I refuse to use 3ED rules, with the possible exceptions of official rules changes that have long been house rules for me there is nothing there to attract my attention, i was just trying to help out a newcomer since it's unlikely he'll be able to get the second ed books as easily as the 3ed ones, and yes i know there are lots of sites like e-bay where thay can also be purchased

What's your favorite campaign setting Neb? I got hooked on Ravenloft early on.

When I started DM'ing I didn't want to be limited by choosing a certain setting, so I created my own, never really made a name for it, but it was so much more fun because there were no limitations, no set mythology or pantheon of gods, no monsters who weren't there, nothing which couldn't happen because of that world's specific laws or gods, and nothing that HAD to happen because I controlled the laws, I controlled the gods.

oic, I developed my own system as well, but when i started i ran ravenloft because it allows you to take characters and rules from anywhere, i also wrote up my own encounter tables, basically just used the established setting as a reference, and had fun with it, i ended up testing my home-brewed setting on a campaign in ravenloft, and to see if they were feasible in actual play, when it worked well i transferred them to it and ran games there for about 2 years. now i'm back to being a player, for now

Based on my groups inability to get together more than a time or two a year, I also developed my own campaign setting.

A nameless town with a bar, and a nearby set of caves with bad stuff in them...lol.

We still haven't made that town safe
