i have never played a MMORPG and I more or less think along the lines of Thoran's comment but I think Harkoliar brings up some good points.
what does the average player spend on games? err.. how many games does on buy per year? Is that figure comparable to paying the subscription each month for a year? The main question is, i think, does the game provide enough interest and content to keep one occupied that one wouldn't even consider other games? It has been said that MMORPGs games such as everquest have been plagued with hardcore power gamers who live in a dog eat dog world and don't really provide a "role playing community" . Could someone that has played these MMORPGs comment on this?

It depends on the gamer...every MMO will have its grinders, and more often than not there are special servers well role playing is key. My bro has been in the original EQ since it came out years and years ago, has played the same ranger, and been in the same guild. He loves it.
I played EQ for a few min years back and it was ok, but that was before I was even a serious gamer like I am now. I am in the WoW beta and I love it. The graphics are awesome and it runs great on my computer, whereas EQ2 won't even run because my graphics card doesnt have a "pixel shader" BS . EQ2's graphic were also a little too...realistic for me, I much prefer WoW's...but then it's all about personal taste with MMOs

just to let you know, it doesnt only apply MMORPG who are plagues with powergamers. you get that in NWN, diablo and other online gamers. i reckon its even worse when its fps where you die and those hard core gamers laugh over your bloody corpse. ive met people like that.

I understand the costs involved with maintaining an online game, I really don't have a problem with subscription based services... I DO have a problem with paying 50 bucks for a game that's worthless if you don't pay a subscription services. The sole reason it bugs me is because it's a transparent Marketing decision that's based on managing the risk that the game will stink.
As I said, if the game is good they will cover their costs easily in subscriptions alone... the up front cost is PURELY a way for them to insure that a crappy game will still make them some money, users have to pay an entry fee that's basically a nonrefundable risk on YOUR part. They've transferred the risk of their game sucking from themselves to the consumer... and that's sleazy, plain and simple. |

i agree there Thoran. I've always looked upon the game itself as a client much like the web browser. generally, companies provide a client for free and charge for the services one accesses with their free client.
if those game companies insist on charging $50 upfront i wish that they would extend the number of months one gets for free. this is definately plausible for Sony who have already established a strong appeal for Everquest and it certainly wouldn't hurt them to give the game away for free. with a MMO company starting out this wouldn't be as easy so unfortunately the customer has to shoulder the initial fees. Harkoliar: If one were to go the lone route in playing Everquest, is there enough content for one to be busy? [ 11-09-2004, 11:23 AM: Message edited by: Too Darkpark ]

Harkoliar, those pictures are awesome. The beta ended over the weekend and i'm so heartbroken, but i should get a chance to go pick up the game sometime soon. Hopefully we can do some adventuring together, i'm not sure what i'll go with in the real game. Barbarian Shaman maybe

I don't see your guy's point...why wouldn't they charge $50 up front? It's the exact same price for any other new game...

and i did state in the above question that the initial payment (buying the games) just pays off for the development those guys have been making for the past years (around 4 years i think). if they charge 100 US then i would complain but 50 USD is the standard price of all games. espeically the awaited release.
