I'm not too sure about the whole "God Bless America" thing. I don't say "God Bless England" or "God Bless Ireland", if I did I'd get a few raised eyebrows. I tried raising my eyebrow then, it didn't work. I'll have to do it with my finger.... |

God can't be everywhere at the same time, he's too busy saving your queen.

The Queen does not need saving. She's got enough money to buy a new God to save her! |

Many have problems with American national pride. I envy it! Our national pride (Canada) is punctured by two deep divisions: 1- French-English 2- People who support the Queen of Canada [read England] and those who don't. To go back to the actual quote, I'd much rather have to deal with "God Bless Canada" or America than "God save the Queen". At least one blesses a country and all of it's inhabitants rather than raising a single one of them to a God like stature. [ 06-10-2003, 09:31 AM: Message edited by: Ryanamur ]

On US Nationalism. I've seen hints of it too. Any good American, IMO, disagrees with the government in at least some ways. Looking to movies about Germany, including Hitler:Rise of Evil but more poignantly Swing Kids, it is easy to see how nationalism can subtly spread. But, the mere hints I've seen amount to a drastic increase in patriotism, but not a true shift towards nationalism. What's great is that post-9/11 the number of flags hanging around went up by a factor of 10 or 20. This is evidence of our ability as a nation to pull together in times of crisis. Terrorists have ironically done a lot for American pride. |

I would very much like to see an example of me rushing to the defence of the crown! The very thought makes me chuckle.

Yeah, patriotism's a good thing... but I'm not going to post any more on the subject because I sense this thread will blow up soon (with or without my help )

Timber never said you advocated the Crown, Donut. He said you were a patriotic British citizen. One can love one's country with out loving the gubermint and it's figure heads. He's right too, you are very quick correct misconceptions about Brit(t)ain and England. If you didn't care (read: weren't patriotic - to some extent at least) you wouldn't bother. He wasn't insulting you.
