Well, ok, they're not THAT cunning. In fact, it's little more than the compulsion to wear the right clothes.

An example?

Infiltrating Mae'Var's guild stronghold. Well, let's look at the party. Two men in full plate armour. That's not good. So, it's off to the shops in Renal's den to buy five sets of leather armour. Best take off our helmets and stop using large shields. We'll stash our gear at Renal's. Nalia should be safe enough as a mage-thief.

And again, in Ust Natha; a Drow warrior wielding a Holy Avenger is a dead givaway. Put all our stuff in the Bag of Holding... and deck out the party in drow gear. An impenetrable disguise.

Does anyone else do this?

No matter where I go in Amn, whether it's Ust Natha, Mae'Var's Guildhall, the Harper's Place, the Druid Grove, or wherever it is, I ALWAYS look like a Pimp :pimpster: But my character is immune to all damage so he doesn't wear armor. All he wears is his blue shirt and pants with his horned helmet with Lilicor in his hands and wearing cloaks, boots, and gloves that would make anyone say "What are you on?"

well i always use drow armors in the underdark, but most of the time i keep the same weapons. theyed be rare but normal magic weapons(that's a bit of a oxymoron) are sometimes used in the underdark, and i make a name for myself in pretty quick in ust natha so i don't think i'll get to much argument, usually the first thing i do after getting there is kill the monsters and take out the fighters in the inn. as for the shadow thieves, i imagine they higher out mercenaries with reasonable consistency

hmm, i thought i didn't, but thinking about it i do equip melee weapons (rather than missile) when i get to civilized areas (e.g. Beregost in BG1) - walking around with a loaded crossbow seems a bit 'provocative' don't you think?

Well, the game I've got on hold right now is not about "disguises" as it is about "fashion models." I've got:
Aerie
Nalia
Jan
Kelsey
Edwin
and myself, a Male Gnomish Fighter/Illusionist (hacked to use the Mage avatar instead of the Fighter one, or maybe I'll use the Hula Wizard).

We march in a straight line up and down the street of Athkatla, perfectly in step, with our various magical Staves shining out like beacons. Our Mage Robes are all neatly ironed (the Guardian Golem in our Planar Sphere also does laundry), and bring a wild splash of color to what would otherwise be such a drab and dreary area. (Jan's Archmagi Robe makes him look like some flippin' circus clown, while my honey Aerie looks a darling in white and gold.)
