If you're planning to take this character to BG2, I recommend either a Paladin or a Mage (not specialist). The Paladin (if you can stand being LG, though I can't) can be kitted to an Undead Slayer in BG2, which is a pretty good class. Also, the mage can be kitted to a wild mage (which is why you have to pick a non-specialist for BG1) for BG2, and they are a lot of fun.

Whenever someone asks what class they should choose, I wonder why they ask.
How do we know, what your opinions are, how do we know what you prefer? It is like asking: What do you think I should eat for breakfast? People would ask, what they prefer themselves, because they do not know if you like cheese, cornflakes og bacon. The question: "If you were to start a new game, which class would you pick then?" would have been more in tune with the answers. I vote rangers. they can cast spells, fight stuff, and stand in the shadows all day.

Well the highest lvl they both can advance in TotSC is level 8. So as D*ranged said: Rangers can cast spells at level 8, but paladins have to wait until they progress one more level. Therefore you see that they can't cast spell in BG1.
