Back again.

Thanks for emphasising the symbollic significance of the tree, Bozos of Bones, as it was a subtle clue. The answer was practically staring me in the face.

I'm all done now in this imposing cold place for the time being. Chapter 3 time methinks!
Edit: Or maybe not. Oswald's ship doesn't seem to have come a long way since we got all the ingredients. Maybe there's something I haven't done? Grr. I've pretty well bought out all good potions, but I suppose I'd best head back and see what else I can find.

How did the game progress to chapter three for you Sponge?

Try talking to the guy in the prison, Nathaniel I think's the name. Make sure you have all the ingredients, because sometimes the game won't let you manually fix it, so you have to use the prisoner.

A few battleSquares questions

On completion of a rank (levels 1 through 5) do you get different "Prizes" depending on what game difficulty level you select?
Do I have to set if to HoF mode to get the goodies?
After you complete this chapter can you return to the Battle square area and continue to fight through the ranks?

For the first rank you need to get three squares in a row (veritcally, horizontally or diagonally) just like tic-tac-toe. You get a square by defeating a monster in the square in 60 seconds. For the second rank you need 4 squares BUT you must not have 3 squares in a row until you win the last square. Try doing the squares in this order:
_______
|1|2|4|
|3| | |
|_|_|_|

For the fifth rank you need to get 7 squares without geting 3 in a row on the first 6. For example:
_______
|1|2| |
|3|7|4|
|_|5|6|

Clear as mud?

Javan made it pretty clear I thought.

*Item Spoiler*

Try changing to Rank 4,5 or 6 for a start. (Using the levers)

Read what the golem says very carefully.

To win the entire rank, you need to systematically go from the easiest victory (3 squares in a row) to the most difficult. So by this logic, you can work out how many victories you need to win each rank.

A Mace of Disruption+2 can be found in one of these middle ranks - and I found it to be very much worth the trouble of getting it indeed. However, that said - I still never completed Battle Squares. I only did it to Rank 7.

When I returned to the Ice Palace for Nickademus' payback mission, to my dismay, the Crystal Golem was nowwhere to be found. So I can't really do anymore anyway.

OK, first you must complete level i ranks 1-5 with 3-7 sqares at a time. Then you do it for level 2 by pulling the second lever. There are 10 levers for rank selectors, two for mode selectors and one mode starter. You don't have to complete ranks in order, you can go straight to level 5 or 9 or whereever you want, but know that level s 7,8,9 and 10 will just about most likely beat you into a bloody pulp.
EDIT: Beating all levels of the squares involves 250+ fights.
