Err, I'm not asking the above nations btw.
Well I didnīt study the different flags as "stand alones" in school. On the other hand I would recognise them if I saw them. The welsh flag is beautiful so that one is no problem (green, white and a nice red griffon right?). But the Irish flag isnīt in the Union Jack is it? You mean Northern Ireland right? That one Iīm not really sure of. Itīs like the English flag with some sign on right?

Edit: But how many Europeans or Americans recognise this flag?

ROTFL Davros. But you are entirely correct. It is the provincial flag of Ontario.

Oh, and you asked about Northern Ireland - a St Gerge Cross (a la England( with a crown on the central vertical above the center of the cross, and a red hand (uf ulster) in a white star centred on the cross.

anyone can answer but please no looking at your passport.
England IS a stand alone independent country and IS NOT part of a bigger country. The official name of the country that England is but a part is England. Other countries have (poorly put, I accept) been taken under the English wing and become Great Britain, the British Isles. Incidentally, we are a tiny Island nation and are NOT part of the European land mass and are therefore not European either.

I will try and post a link on it with more evidence.

and sorry no again great britain is not the full and complete title of that country
You are most correct. Great Britain, the British Isles was NEVER the name of a country. England is the name of my country bordered by the independent countries of Wales and Scotland. These form a part of Great Britain.

Well I'll tell you, Charlie, I sure learned something from your post. Like Ronn-Bman, I though the Union Jack was the flag of England. Yes, I am an American BUT I truly do watch a lot of educational channels that deal with the history of the the world. Still, I never knew about the stand alone flag of England. Please enlighten further what the colors mean and how long this flag has represented your country.
The flag goes back to the times of the crusades and the history of the Knights Templars and hospitallers. (The Templars are sometimes believed to have started the masons and masonic rites). They are also the group where the unlucky Friday the thirteenth superstition started.
(EDIT) Better Link
Anyway, the flag has been used since the 12th century as I understand it.

This is fairly lame but I happened upon it.

I remember pictures/drawings of the Templar Knights wearing those white shirts with the red cross on it, so I guess you're right

Albromor,

This site tells a little about the Union flag.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~mosmd/flags.htm

This paragraph mentions the Cross of St George flag as opposed to the Union flag.

In 1707, England and Wales united with Scotland to form the Kingdom of Great Britain. With the union, England ceased to be sovereign nation (although retaining its identity as a distinct division of Great Britain. The St. George's Cross flag continued to serve as England's distinct flag--a role it continues today.
