With most of the commonly touted combination classes (mage/cleric, kensai/thief) I can see the advantage they present, but I am a little confused by the ranger/cleric. What is it that these two classes can do for each other in combination?

After much scouring of the rule book, I think I'm missing something obvious.

They have access to both druid and clerical priest spells AFAIK. I also think it's nice to turn undead while concealed by HiS.

R/C is one of the most powerful classes. He can protect him to his gills with some of the best spells in the game. Death Ward,Ironskins,Harm,Righteous Magic,Turn Undead... etc.

He`s a dual wielding destructor. I am currently soloing him and it goes very smoothly.

Also when dual wielding FoA,Fulcrum and similar weapons along with great HLA`s (if you have ToB) like Energy Blades,Aura of Flaming Death...

Flail of Ages & Crom Faeyr as weapons.

Pick your favorite armor.

All Cleric and Druid spells (according to your Cleric level -- yes, this is a bug in ALL Bioware games).

Isn't Ironskins a level 5 druid spell? In my charts a ranger only gets druid spells up to level 3. Does the MC overcome the ranger spell casting cap?

Fighter->Driud (dualed at level 9 with Grand Mastery in scimitars) I can see the point of. Good armour + Ironskins makes a great tank. And dualing rather then MC helps with the long gap between levels 14 and 15 that is Jaheira's biggest weakness. Plus she can't get Grand Mastery.

the ranger/cleric gain both cleric and druid spells of all spell levels. This is a bug but can't be fixed since it's hardcoded. It's not meant to be like that.

A DC Ranger->Cleric will not be hampered by the level cap and have Ironskins available.
I am only starting to realise how powerful this could be myself especially if the ranger comes from BG1/TotSC with 21 in Wisdom. I think I have such a character in store. In the end the amount of spells will be completely insane. Perhaps I should give it a spin. One thing though - how do you open doors without Knock?

Both Ranger/Clerics and Ranger->Clerics (that's my shorthand for the difference between Multiclassing & Dualclassing) are major cheese factories. The Cleric->Ranger is usually less so, however.

A lot of the decisions that the game engine makes are based on whether the character involved is of a certain class. Level is irrelevant--even if the character only has 1 or 2 levels of a certain class, it still counts.

If the character's "Thief" flag is True (example: Nalia), they can use Long Swords.
If the character's "Fighter" flag is True (example: Anomen), they can use Potions of Heroism.
If the character's "Mage" flag is True, they can wear Mage Robes.

And now the relevant bit:
If the character's "Ranger" flag is True, they gain access to the Druid half of the Priest scroll.
If the character's "Cleric" flag is True, they gain access to the Cleric half of the Priest scroll.
These attributes are cumulative, and the game compares the spellslots granted by your Ranger half with the spellslots granted by your Cleric half, and gives you whichever one is higher.
