Someone made a thread (that had some arguing) in it a little while ago asking what your AD&D stats would be. I think they said that average stats are 9 and above average is 12.

don't go for the average man..go for the average chicken!!! with nothing above 3 and an intellegence of 1 if i remember correctly.....
i think the average stat is 8 for second edition...but i'm not sure....

Since you're rolling 3d6, 9-12 should be roughly "average" stats, with anything outside of that considered above or below average.

Yeah, an average score of 9 is about right for non-adventuring sorts. But that doesn't mean that they're ALL 9's: Someone who has 12 STR but 6 WIS might choose to do manual labor, while someone with 15 CON but low CHA might become a coal miner (the pay's good, if you can tolerate the bad air).
Adventurers, however, can be relied on to have average stats much higher than 9, because if they were no better than anyone else, they'd have to be pretty stupid to become adventurers. Xen: Can you juggle 8 balls at a time? Tightrope between skyscrapers? Pick locks with a paper clip? Then 18 DEX you probably ain't got. These are all things that Humans can do, and since Humans are capped at 18 DEX....you get the idea. As for the 18 CON....I suppose the circus performer who stopped cannonballs with his stomach would be a good bar to aim for.
