How do I kill the Bloated Dire Spider?

I just purchased NWN this weekend.
I'm in the Crypts and about to enter the Graveyard but a Dire Spider is in my way. I can't kill it as it always poisons me and decreases my strength. I have a Tower shield, Bastard Sword +1, Greater Sword, Long Bow, good armor, plenty of heal potions, barkskin, etc.

The spider kills me everytime and if I run past it, it follows me into the Graveyard.

Any tips?

get a henchman to distract the damn thing. then, just shoot it with your arrows. get some antidotes for the poison, and try to buff yourself up. once you get the hang of it, it will be pretty easy. if your henchman dies, or you start to, just use the stone of recall, go to Aribeth, and she will heal you for free. then go into the portal, and it will warp you right back to where you were, in this case, fighting the spider. i hope this helps.

Drinking 2-3 potions of Endurance (yes effects are cumulative) before the fight helps raising your resistance to poison. Having antidote potions in a quick slot helps a lot.

But if every thing else fails, go visit another district, do some misc quests, gain 2-3 levels then return to the Spider.

I managed to kill it. I hired someone and attacked it from behind with my two handed sword.

Thank the gods for Critical hits.

what in god's name are you doing with all those weapons?

The Towershield, bastard sword+1, great sword, bow, plus armor - that's probably 100-120 pounds. Unless you are a half-orc, it's a miracle you can even walk!

save up some loot and then go to the temple and buy the "amulet of lesser health". It makes you immune to poison and disease!!
