I just got to thinking this as I was driving home from the movies and admiring all the people's houses with those icicle lights and various other xmas decorations on their front lawns.
So in the northern hemisphere xmas time is usually enjoyed by having fun in the snow, snuggling up in front of a fire, putting up lights that resemble icicles, and decorating the inside of your place with various xmas things that are usually covered in fake snow. Now, I know in the southern hemisphere its summer, so theres a, shall we say, lack of snow, and a lack of cold that makes cuddling in front of fires not necessary. My question is this: How do you guys downunder enjoy and decorate for xmas

We usualy go to the beach on christmas day morning and go to a friends house for a BBQ or have family around with a more traditional (British) Christmas meal. Plenty of suntan lotion or we end up looking like the Santa suit
And boxing day is always the start of a 5 day cricket match, great for vegging out in front of the tv with family or friends, or to take a radio to the side of the pool and lay on the inflatable lilo holding a cold beer. About 80% of the Christmas cards we recieve have european style snow scenes on them, weird uh ! We always try and send some more Australasian type cards. Sometimes I have to work over Christmas

And people spray that fake snow on their windows. Very bizarre!

We don't decorate all that much...obviously public buildings and areas in the city will be decorated, and some families will cover their houses with lights - but as a whole it's a lot more laid-back - in a way not dissimilar to the way I remember Christmas being celebrated in LA - didn't snow there, either. Much more low-key than LA, though.
As for celebrating, at this time most of us are off to the beach. With the sun starting to go down at 7:30pm or so, that's plenty of time for us who live near the beach to go and catch a few waves or a bit of sun after work. Christmastime is a celebration of sun, surf and sand here, LB - and no law that says you can't snuggle on the beach in the evenings. Usually Christmas is a day of rest in build up to the almighty celebration as we prepare to pulverise some poor lesser race of ricketing mortals in the Boxing Day test match.
Mind you, that is the release date of Return of the King here, so there will be precious little interest in the match this year .

Mm.. normal decorating here, something to windows, and something to a big tree in our yard. Since we all know that Santa is from Finland (don´t start to claim otherwise, or crazy baboons take you...), we expect his visit. Most of us have a big ham, and a xmas sauna, of course. Then we dive naked to a cold lake...
Ok, maybe not. And I guess Finland is behind the globe to some of ya. [ 12-08-2003, 02:15 PM: Message edited by: NiceWorg ]

It's my opinion that you have never really experienced Chrismas until you've had one with real snow everywhere.
I just can't picture Chrismas without snow and the Chrismas tree... [ 12-08-2003, 02:15 PM: Message edited by: Luvian ]
