Really? Damn, Microsoft's defragmentation analizer showing me fragmentation after a fresh install. The bastards!

After a recently fresh install of Windows 2000 Server. No software, no games, nothing but Win2k Server:

My comp says a defrag is not necessary tho...should i defrag anyway?

Cos this is seriously affecting my enjoyment of this game.
Sounds exactly the same as mine lol, Um we both have AMD processors and both have a geforce card, I wonder whether there is some sort of compatability problem with either the processor or card when playing IWD2?, anyway I'm going to download the latest geforce drivers and see it it maes any difference.

Secondly I would say that a system like the one you describe cannot "hang" in battles. DO you have the latest DirectX installed? If no, try upgrating. Also if you do have a spare disk try installing XP to see what will happen.

Third, a freshly installed system never has "gaps". No need for defragmenting.

One thing you need to know is that a system with WIN98 "sees" only 128MB of memory and the rest is used as "secondary cashe". So a system with win98 and 512MB of memory usualy does not have a swap file except you run photo editing software or use many "heavy" programs togeather.

Do you have a quick hard disk? Have you encountered any similar problems with BG2/ToB?

As for win2k, if you enable 3D in BG series games, it does not work well.
As for DX, I've got DirectX 8.1 installed is there a newer version out yet? Secondly as for windows XP, I've been thinking of getting it, prehaps I'll borrow my dads copy and see what I think. As for a quick hard disk its 7200rpm, so I don't see any problems there. Finally, Yup I've got IWD, BG and BG2/TOB and have never experienced any problems with any of them.

Well anyway I'm making fair progress with the game playing on the lower settings and to be entirely honest it isn't all that bad, So thanks for the help guys but I'm think I'm going to stick it out as it is.

P.S If anyone does know whats wrong, then still feel free to post, I'd still apprieciate answers if anyone can supply them

Um I've just happened across this little Slowdown fix over at Sorcerer's place,
Here's a quote on what it says:

This is an unofficial fix for the annoying slowdown problems which some people are experiencing in some areas, like the Goblin Warrens level 2, where the game seems to pause every second and becomes almost unplayable.
Thanks to Extremist & Quint for sending this in!
I've not got time to try it out now, but I'll let you know if it works ok tomorrow.

P.S - Heres the link for any other people like Bristowe who are experiencing similar problems: http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/IWD2/index_editors1.htm

Try increasing your virtual memory... look in help under "Changing Virtual Memory Size"... some of my games were lagging (not actuallt IWD2, but quite a few) so I increased it to about 1000Mb... maybe that'll work
I believe that if you did not have problem with the previous games (BG/ToB) this means that the problem is in the game and not your system, meaning that maybe blackisle has not tested it (I do NOT know, just guessing) quite enough in win98 (after all it is a 5 years old system, not meaning that it is not a good system)

As for you Tanoch Thas'ala, I find quite strange a fragmentation level like that in a freshly installed system, and this have never happened to me in my 10years semi-professional experiance..... in any system I've made!

Just letting you all know that that Slowdown Fix I found works, everything is running as it should do now, so I can finally relax and get into the game.

MYCW: all of my Black Isle games experience a "slow down" to a greater or lesser extent, which I attribute to memory leaks caused by a bug in the pathfinding routines. Pourquoi? Because the "slowdowns" seem to occur when there are lots of opponents or civilians on the map, going about their business. I figure that some buffer or other gets crammed full of garbage that the programmers forgot to make a routine to clean out. I find I have to completely reboot the system to get a "fresh" start, whereupon the game runs fine for a while (it varies depending on game and how many creatures are in the area) and then slows down once again.

This is particularly annoying during large battles, when the game can come to almost a complete freeze. Since it is impossible to save during a battle, I either have to wait until the battle is over (which can take quite a bit of time) or bag it, reboot, and start the fight over. Incidentally, I had thought that this problem might be linked to old sound or graphics drivers, but when I checked them I had the latest copies, so it isn't that, nor is it a problem with DirectX, which is also up-to-date. It really annoys me that some people don't have this problem at all -- I hate to be singled out like that.

I am using a program that clean my RAM and optimise it. It's very usefull and free. It's called FreeRAM XP Pro.

With a name like that you might think it work only only on windows xp, but it's not the case, it work with all version of windows.
