The reason for that is to preserve the plot continuity of the various romance options. Bodhi is supposed to kidnap your loved one and you are supposed to save your loved one from vampirism.
I fail to remember this being an issue at all when I played....
My party consisted of at the time:
My dwarf Fighter, Vastlaar
Aerie (Fair skills...lots of spells!)
Minsc (I killed this dogmatic overrated swine in the first game!)
Yoshimo (Imoen becomes veritably annoying and they ruined her in BG2 IMOH)
Nalia (got rid of her intermittently...)
Edwin (Probably my favourite NPC in the series apart from Xan)

I remember vaguely some lines from Aerie later in the game which were affectionte, but wouldn't go so far as to say it was a romance!
Furthermore, I see that the need to preserve plot continuity in this fashion a weakness in the game, if indeed it is the reason for the event annoyance.
As for it being the greatest RPG ever made, I think its sheer linearity as compared to the original speaks for itself! As much as I loved its story and the villain, it still disappointed me. :|

I love talking about the series though! Sorry this is so very off topic!
To tie it in somehow, I would have loved a couple of NPC's in IWD as optional to the essential plot, as I think it would have given it a little more of the character dynamicism that the BG series has. Does the Trails of the Luremaster add on have any NPCs? If so, I'd be very tempted to try it myself!
