A Simple Warning on Cussing.

I have been getting a few Emails about a few people cussing excessively. This is NOT allowed.

Ironworks is visited by ALL ages, and this means the under 14 crowd as well.

I will give this one warning, and then just start blocking entire IP addresses of the offending parties.

The Mods and I have worked hard to keep Ironworks (And the Great Escape) Clean and friendly since we started the website in 1994 (Before AD banners!!) [img]smile.gif[/img] . So just be nice, use clean language and enjoy thy self! Ale for all!

PS: For those that are wondering about the rules here; At the top of every page is the 'Rules' Button. Click on it and (re)read it.

Not to be rude.. but if I say.. "the rapax king completely ****** up my party" .. does that count as cussing? when using *s instead of letters? Or should I rephrase.. "the rapax king completely screwed up my party" ("screw" isn't cussing, is it?)

Or instead of using *'s as a weak attempt to cover up cussing, maybe try using a thesaurus and expanding your vocabulary. So instead of saying "The Rapax king ***** my party" You could try "The Rapax king devastated my group". Just a friendly suggestion [img]smile.gif[/img]

I think sometimes cussing is just the best way to explain a situation.
Cussing almost adds some extra emotion to your words.
I know i am one of the reasons this thread was put up.
and i understand.
I do believe that its more the vulgarity of the context in the cussing.
I enjoy the ironworks forums very much, prolly because this place does tend to cater to a much more mature audiance.
Oh and someone made a remark about a thesaurus,
People that use foul language here and there are not uneducated because they do so.
Many of us here are college educated proffesionals that enjoy these types of games.
We enjoy the bit of escapism that the games bring.
And to a certain extent this forum too.

I think that using the **** icons should be enough to keep everyone happy, dont most of you think?
That way those of use that want to get our point accross will.
And those of you that dont want to see such words wont.

So remember folks when you se **** just substitute it with a word from your thesaurus.

(My thesaurus is bigger than yours, cuz it has cuss words too)

The key word in your statement is 'sometimes'. The problem as I see it isn't so much cursing as it is casual cursing. Overuse of anything makes it less than effective on its audience.

I can recall many times when I have been quite irate about something someone wrote or something I had encountered and was able to express my emotions without resorting to foul language. By using restraint in my language I have found it then lends more weight to my words and my anger on the rare occasions when I've been so completely furious that I actually included a single curse word in a post.

Let me add that I have never been so frustrated by a game that I have cursed in a post. While I will admit to using more foul language in verbal discussions than in emails, I have always felt that less is more and try to express myself without resorting to crude language (at least, not in someone's hearing).

It is always possible to get a point or an emotion across without using foul language. And it is something we need to make an effort to do in a family-oriented forum such as this one. Based on the quality of the writing in the vast majority posts I have read here since I joined, that should prove to be no problem for us all.

Although I haven't been able to demonstrate it here (yet), I do have an extensive English vocabulary, at least for a Norwegian 19-year old. (then again, I'm studying English at university-level, so I'd be in trouble if I didn't have a wide vocabulary.

The reason I asked, was just to clarify. I don't enjoy cursing, either outloud (except when someone kills me in Counterstrike) or in writing, but I wanted to know. If cussing isn't "allowed" why isn't it bleeped out by the forum's code? Boards like www.metallica.com permits cussing, seeing as the board entertains Metallica and hard rock fans, which use some cussing when performing live, but I don't see why the code here wasn't generated so that curse-words would get 'bleeped' out.

It's a bit different here in the US forums than the Norwegian ones. I've thought about this for some time, I guess it's a cultural thing. I know Americans pride themselves on the right to free speech, but it's a paradox that here in Norway (where we do not pride ourselves on the right to free speech)we can say anything we like in our forums.

It's not solely cursing which is allowes, but any kind of vulgar, gratuitous, sexually explicit, violent words, phrases and explanations are not removed from the administrators. That kind of interests are just part of our everyday life, and talking about is a natural thing to do.

I won't bore you much more than I already have, but I'd just like to say that my initial question in my first post in this thread was hypothetical. I guess I'm obsessed with knowing my (and everyone else's) boundaries, even if I don't intend to cross them.

You know, over here in Britain we call it swearing, uttering obsenities, extracting the Michael, etc. A vocabulary is such a wonderful thing to have at ones disposal (even if tempted to shout "just forking die" at a group of monsters that have just wiped out a character and wasted all of you're ressurection powders to boot).

the diabloii.net boards automatically turn certain words into "[I want my mummy]" (how very English of them).

I think it's kinda funny though because the whole forum now knows what they were trying to say, and it's the community F-word )

The fun part is using the old David Letterman joke "phrases that sound dirty, but aren't"

Really though, words are just that... words. They only have power because people single certain ones out. Yes, there are appropriate times for them, and I feel they should be used when it is appropriate. I mean, it's not like the Queen is reading them

I personally learned all of mine going to Hockey games... I'm sure all the European children expanded their vocabulary some while going to football games ;o)
