Next week the British government is expected to announce changes to the antiquated drinking laws in this country. Pubs and restaurants will be allowed to stay open and serve alcohol 24 hours a day. It means that if you come out of the cinema or theatre at 11 o'clock you will be able to have a drink in a pub.

This announcement has no connection with the possible General Election on 7th June by the way.

To be honest CB the all night pub/drinking thing is nothing new in itself, in fact it's often compulsory when I'm out with my mates. It's the legalities attatched to it that's the issue......but then again I never went a bunch on law & order anyhow.

They were relaxed a few years back. Originally it was (I think)
Mon - Sat 11AM - 3PM and 5.30PM to 11PM with 20 mins allowed to "drink up".
Sun - 12 lunch - 2 or 2.30 PM then 7PM to 10.30PM.

That was changed to open all day but with the same opening and closing times.

These laws (correct me if I'm wrong) apparently had something to do with preventing the workers getting pissed during the day. I also seem to remember that they had some war time connotations.

Wow, good for you guys!! They kick us out of the bars at 2:AM. I guess that it is not that bad, but when you are having a good time, it's kind of a pisser.

I think the current laws were passed during WW1 to stop munitions workers giong to the pub at lunchtime, then coming back to their factories pissed in the afternoon

As we are not currently at war with anyone, its probably safe to relax them a bit now

About TIME! Personally, I think a lot of the problems with drink are caused by having to cram it in over such a short time. In Spain, where 24 hour drinking is common, the locals very rarely get smashed, they lave that to the tourists
