I am always happy to hear of cultures where age and wisdom are respected. Too often in the West (in my experience) we shunt our older folk off behind the scenes and don't take advantage of the rich texture of life-experience they have to offer us. I've spent many an hour with senior family and friends, who taught me the value of experience. It's truly amazing what you can gain from really paying attention and giving a little of yourself.

So, Yorick, does the Singaporan culture venerate the elders as some Chinese cultures do? Or is it different?

CloudStudent

Yes. The 'Senior Minister' here (different from President and Prime Minister) is the same guy that tried and failed merging Singapore with Malaysia, and that guided Singapore towards prosperity. Though he has no real official capacity in Government, his words are heeded and given much respect.

I've decided though that I can't in good conscience continue to blanketly refer to Singaporeans as Chinese. It would be like someone calling me British.
One of my new friends is fourth or fifth generation Singaporean, and besides speaking a very different accent of Mandarin (influenced by English and Malay), their culture - though similar, is markedly different from "The Middle Kingdom".

"Can I look at it?
"No we've seen enough of that one....."

Yorick, didn't you mention somewhere that you had a gig coming up ?
How did that go ? And how do you go about organizing your opportunities to perform, do you just go to bars and clubs and ask or do they contact you ?

On being unable to see Singaporeans as Chinese anymore: I have never been to Asia, but I watched a wonderful movie, Chungking Express, that is set in Hong Kong, in '95 or '96. Upon leaving the cinema my overwhelming feeling was: "Wow, they seem so westernized in the way they feel and act, how are they going to cope with having to live under mainland China's rule soon ? "

(Yes, I noticed that for your description of how you experienced the Singaporeans "westernized" wouldn't be the right fit and that you also meant to say that they have developed their national identity.)

I'm in Paris! I was last here eight or so years ago and straight away I got caught up in the romantic visual delight Paris contains. Spring is in the air, fashion on the streets, the language of poets drifts by as I walk down tree lined Boulevardes resplendant with white gloved traffic police..... and lunatic drivers.

I've managed to find an affordable yet comfortably ambient hotel near the Arc. Complete with shutters and a view of a cosy French street.

I walked past Notre Dame, and the twin Isles, walked past a palace, cafe after cafe and bookstores galore. When I was last here I was amazed at the Parisian appetite for literary sustenance, parks were filled with book readers in their hundreds. It seems this has not yet abated.

More soon. I intended only to stay today, but I may just stay a while more. Such a vibe. It lifted my spirits straight away, as it did eight years ago.

Hi Yorick. Paris ! City guy as you are, you must be thrilled. Did you improve your French ?

Now, how can you not feel frustrated to stay in Paris only for a few days ? Everytime I went there, I had a very hard time leavingm there were so many things I had missed ...

I'd had some interesting times already. I'm going to try and see the Louvre while I'm here too.

I felt like I was a wandering Bard in BG when I stumbled across this fellow in a cobbled sidestreet performing what seemed like a trick with three black discs the size of a large Oreo - one was white on the bottom. It soon became apparent that it was a form of gambling as people were putting money on their choice as to which one was white after he had shuffled them. He was a bit of an illusionist too, as he would distract an individual and spin the paper they were resting on around so they got it wrong.

After getting them all right mentally for a while he sucked me in with a 'freebie' (that I won) before offering me money on the next one. Of course once I moved my eyes to my wallet......

Thankfully I only lost 100Fr (AUD$25 - $30) but gained an increased desire to avoid gambling!!!!!

Yorick ! I heard recently on the radio that you Aussies are one of the most addicted gamblers in the world - seems that you spend an average of 4 000 FF (~ 540 USD) per year and per person on gambling machines ! And this rate goes up to 20 000 FF (~ 2 700 USD) per year and per person in SE Australia where you live ...

Is this true ?

I'd say so. The NSW government run a state lottery that brings in heaps of revenue. Both Sydney and Melbourne have huge casinos and pokies have replace bands in many public bars They are a blight on society IMHO! That was actually one of the very very very few times (twice???) I have placed a bet, so I am atypical the majority of Aussies in that regard. Most have a punt on the Melbourne Cup at least.
