it sounds like the bill they're proposing would prohibit discussion of protection measures as well. once again a government body trying to legislate something without looking at all sides of the issue (just my opinion from teh information shown, there may be a provision in the bill I am unaware of)

I read about this earlier today, and I think there is a bit of confusion as to exactly what the policy entails.
It doesn't actually advocate under-age sex as a whole, but rather acknowledges that they can't really prevent it, and so encourage those who are set on sexual activity to build up to it, hence the wording "A pause" and the scheme having "stopping points." Way to go UK, is there any doubt that their govenment is run by men. Watch out UK you are about to be over run with even more Yanks, this legislation, and a cold beer what more could a red blooded American man want? Now going in the other direction, isn't that just considered part of the warm-up phase? It seems to me that the UK ladies are geting the shaft...er...giving the...er...being jipped in this arrangement. EDITrehaps there should be an addition to the proposed legislation, making beer drinking manditory while this action is preformed. [ 02-21-2003, 05:01 PM: Message edited by: John D Harris ]

This seems eminently sensible, surely talking about sex is better for the youngsters than actually indulging their rampant hormonal impulses. I say go further and set up secure phone networks where they can indulge in oral sex whenever the fancy to chat about the subject takes them. That would be just the thing to keep their burgeoning desires in check.

Wow! That is pretty over the top. Over here they get mad at the idea of handing out condoms.
Isn't that a bit like saying "just snort cocaine" in order to keep someone who actually wants to be a junkie from smoking crack?

Well, at least it wasn't a complete loss.

This program seems to be another example of how governments are trying to fill the role of parents. Whose job is it to keep children (esp. under 16!) from getting pregnant/causing pregnancies? THE PARENTS!
The program is attempting to take over the job of the parent, but in reality, it will interfere with those parents who are doing their job. I imagine the majority of parents out there do not want their teenagers experimenting with oral sex, so teaching it in the schools will undermine what those parents are trying to do. Maybe it will help kids whose parents aren't spending enough time with them, but I just don't think the schools are the place to teach morality and sexuality. It would be interesting to do a study of the last two or three generations of teenagers, and compare teen pregnancy rates to the percentages of single parent families, divorced parents, and households where both parents worked. I have a feeling that our parents generation had less teen pregnancies from a combination of less mass media exposure, parental involvement, and fear of consequences (how often are teen fathers forced by their parents to "do the right thing" by marrying the girl they knocked up?) For myself, when I get married and have kids, I will find a way to free either myself or my wife from having to work. Having a bigger house and nicer toys is all well and good, but it's better to love your children than to spoil them.
