Is the mage magic missle wand worth buying? Has anyone had success with it?

IIRC, it only shoots one missle regardless of level, so it seems pretty worthless to me.

Its not utterly worthless really when you consider at low levels a possible scenario where your mage runs out of spells, darts or sling bullets.
I always buy it for quick blasting magic users or other creatures from distance for a round or for exactly the type of scenario I described. Sure, compared to your average level 12 mage's magic missile quotient its paltry, but still, any free damage can be quite handy at times.

Isn't the magic missile wand unrestricted regarding who can use it? I've given it to a cleric for quick disruption of opposing spellcasters.
I believe it also works when the character is silenced, so it's a useful item to have in desperate situations. Edit: the Wand of Magic Missiles only shoots one missile; Pemby's Wand of Many Missiles, however, shoots three at a time. [ 12-29-2004, 06:38 PM: Message edited by: Aerich ]

Ironically, the usefulness of the wand ramps up as the difficulty increases. Enchanted ammunition is always a rarity, and with the increased HP of hostiles on higher difficulties, you may come to find that there is simply not enough ammo to shoot them all.
Melee is fine and dandy, but your backline supporters such as the Mage are ill-designed for melee combat, and will be quite... useless in situations where they may run out of spells and enchanted ammunition. In comes the Wand of Magic Missile. It cannot miss, and it deals Magic Damage. Handy against the many Wights that inhabit the Vale of Shadows. When it comes to higher difficulties, damage is damage, no matter where it comes from. |
