You actually have pictures of 259 MB? LOL that's huge. That's a lot more than my record of putting 10 MB on a floppy (it wasn't full afterwards)

Must've been a scene with a lot of a single color or large solid patches of color. Pictures typically don't compress much more than 50% unless you go to lossy (jpg typically) compression. Additionally RAR isn't as good at compressing pictures as a dedicated image algorithm would be.
Text on the other hand... THAT compresses REALLY well. |

Compresses well, but I bet it looks crap though. Care to show us a before and after? You can actually compress more with 7zip, I would recommend it for anyone who doesn't use it already, very nice for compressing some files.

i would assume showing us a before is out of the question, what site will host a 259 meg picture? most wont allow more than 100 combined!

Would that be something Fireworks spat out? It's compression algorithms aren't the best... export it with something like GIMP, and you'll likely not have an image of 259 MB to start with (and I've not noticed any loss of quality - there is often alot of redundant data that can be removed (like more colours than you're using; and blank frames in the middle of an animation)...
Ross, the image quality won't be downed by RARing. Archive formats are, as a rule, lossless. |

And I downloaded the rar from a site, its a map from the original Super metroid. it is here (Right click and save as) Once downloaded, you have to rename it, remove the ".bmp" part at the end. [ 12-15-2004, 11:38 PM: Message edited by: Hivetyrant ] |

Well it's like Thoran said, maybe 75% of it is all black.
