I haven't solo'ed IWD but a friend and I are taking 2 characters thru IWD/HOW on Heart of Fury mode starting from level one. One is a Fighter/Mage/Thief and the other is a Ranger/Cleric.

So if we can make it through with those two in HOF mode, I would guess that soloing a multi-class mage is possible.

I guess that soloing any class is possible - some would just be more difficult than others. If I was going to solo a mage, I would go for something like a mage/cleric; fighter/mage or perhaps a fighter/mage/thief or fighter/mage/cleric .. all of them multi-class.

Yes it is possible, although sometimes youll run into a wall. Ive solo'd ICW with a fighter, a ranger(the easiest so far) and a mage/thief. Im not sure if its possible to solo with a pure mage(unless your really good at slinging stones). There are a few monsters that have VERY VERY high magic resistance (yxienamie..cant spell her name).
