Well, for some reason when I try to open the game it crashes just before the screen where I get to select 'Load', IE: the opening ads go by (I hit left mouse button through them) then I am left in the black with the little gloved hand just looming around the screen. My monitor light will start to blink as I try to get Task Manager to let me end the program so that I can get back to mydesktop. Its a struggle. I am running XPpro on a Dell 4500 - a new system that has worked fine up until yesterday. I did download a patch from Microsoft for the OS, and IE 6, but that shouldn't have caused this problem. I also see that my OS is maxed out while trying to run NWN... 100%. I run very large programs on the system without problems - NWN has run fine also in the past. Any ideas????

I was also having some difficulty with NWN, mostly due to the game using up all my resource and RAM, thus crashing when it got beyond it's cap. I have Win98, with 512MB SDRAM, but am told that WIn98 has no idea how to properly use that RAM. I had my settings to where Windows was controlling the size of the available Virtual Memory. Alot of people gave me alot of ideas, but finally, after sifting through all those idea, I decided to go with the majority of the vote, and told Windows that I would control the Virtual Memory. I set the minimum to 512MB, and the Maximum to 1,024MB. I also set the VM to run on a quiet, never used partition of my Harddrive...so that it would have more runinng space without bumping into other apps. So far, I have not crashed.
Therefore, if you are having issues with cache size...find the best way for your OS to manage how the memory is used. There are alot of guys on this forum that know alot about it, but alot of them don't agree with one another. BY the way...turn everything off that you do not need running while playing. |

You could also try removing the update you added with the Add/Remove program manager in your control panel. That worked for me when I installed the SP1 upgrade fom MS, for some reason it buggered up NWN something fierce. I run a Dell 4300 with 512 meg sdram and XP home.

ya know, I do think that the current IE update is what screwed thingis up. I had a version of SP1 and upgraded to another. Just after that...NWN wouldn't work. SO, I will try that. thanks. As to the other thing of upping my Virtual Memory, I tried that, but really think that shouldn't be the problem.

How do I uninstall a particular version of SP1?? My option seems to be only to remove IE6 in the Add/Remove of the control panel.

Really? How odd.
My XP Home version machine allows me to remove even single hotfix installations. On my Dell the hotfixes and SP1 were listed at the very bottom of the Add/Remove window. Let look around and see if I have some box or other clicked that perhaps you don't. It seems I remember something about a dialog when I set up this machine that asked if I wanted to track updates. Let me look around. I of course may be full of Poo and just remembering something from another program. OK... This might not help but, lets look at something. Go To... Control Panel Click on the System icon and open it. Click on the System Restore Tab Does the box labeled "Turn Off System Restore" have a check mark? If it does click in the box to remove the check. Now restart and look at your Add/Remove programs to see if, Hopefully, your system kept track of the installed hotfixes and SP1. It might only do it from now on. This is about the only thing I can think of. The System Restore should automatically track changes to your system and allow you to remove recent updates or installations that cause problems. At least I hope so. I don't know as much as some of the folks here and I might just be talking out my arse. If so, I apologize. [ 01-24-2003, 08:57 AM: Message edited by: Wulfere ] |

i had the same with NWN demo and another game and it was caused by old video card drivers. it could be that the update caused an error with this ( if the above things don't work). i had to format a computer once after downloading ms patch

Here is what I think finally worked. I went into the Device Manager and clicked on display adapters and then right clicked on nvidia - selected Update Drivers. I then just restored what I think had been axed by some download. It now works fine again! PHEW! Thanks for your ehlp and suggestions. I did so much tweaking and sweating that who know what really fixed it!

If it ever happens again I have two words for you......System Restore
This truly is your FRIEND and a welcome addition to WinXP, all you had to do was roll back a day or so and it would have erased any changes

Actaully I did a system restore once with XP Home and it buggered up almost all my images and and game files. But, when I reversed the restore everything was fine.
I am glad to hear your problems are taken care of Shrylia. [ 01-26-2003, 08:52 PM: Message edited by: Wulfere ] |
