Statistics show that people sleep 1/3 of their time on Earth, but how, I wonder, do we we spend 20+ years sleeping? Also, around 4 years ago the recommended amount of sleep for the average American adult was 9 hours. Now it has reduced to 7. With so much going on in our lives, why do we even sleep?

Sleep bad! Must not sleep, must not sleep.....

Personally I find that I can make do with 5 hours of sleep per day without too much loss of mental efficiency if I don't mind spending the first couple of hours after waking up in a zombified state.

I sleep much les than my wife - which is why I love BG games so much. I really run on about 5 hours through the work week.

I saw a special TV program a couple of years back. Subjects were deprived of all time-related info. They could only watch videos, they lived in a bunker, etc. No sun - no timeclocks - no TV to indicate time passing. On average, and I found this very hard to believe, the subjects fell into a sleep pattern that averaged 2-3 hours per 24-hour period.

Interesting, no? For folks like me - who see every minute sleeping as one less spent living - this is inspirational.

The older you get the less sleep you need. I don´t need that much sleep 5-6 hours/night so by definition I´m old then . I thought 7-8 hours was the recommended time to sleep. That at least matches the REM patterns...

Here's wishing I could get away with 3 hours sleep a night, 'specially over the weekends
We've just had daylight savings and it has fully screwed up my sleep patterns, doesn't usually but before it came into effect I was doing fine on 6 hours sleep. Since we put our clocks forward an hour though mI've been feeling like crap on anything less than 8??? Someone care to explain or am I just a freak?

I'd expect the total opposite if that is the case. Or, for me it is.
