I got this e-mail from Javi in Spanish with a 417K attachment. I haven't opened it, but I just wondered if anyone else got one.

Hmm, I'd watch that one, Reeka. Sounds pretty big to me. Is the style consistent with your friend's?

Yes i got one such e-mail from a guy named "Bain" I've decided to open it and report my findings...

>"do you enjoy advertising? Do you enjoy looking at the advertising of things?
>Well these things will enjoy being seen by you as they are advertisments too!
>Just wait until you see the wonderfull things that these random items can do
>it's amazing what advertising can advertise and advertise for you!
>So come on down to the AD-Hut! We're jolly good fun!
>Its fun looking at advertisments, so come on every one!"

It then continues with several lines of just random numbers and letters like "39284230492308ajdfkwe09f8023" for about 10 paragraphs, then it switches to the e-mail adresses of about 800,000 people, and then a huge animated gif which they may as well have done in flash portraying how "awesome" advertising it...

O-o

I don't think so, then again I don't check my hotmail very often either. With DK's findings, sounds as if this guy is quite busy.

It sounds like a worm or a Trojan...I would delete it and email Javi asking him if he sent you something. Can't be too careful these days.

I got it and my AV software immediately identidied it as a virus. My advice would be to delete it immediately - DO NOT open the .cpl (or other) attachment.

Any time someone I know sends me an unexpectedly large file, I ask them whether they sent it or not. At least once, they had sent it to me.

More often than not, it's someone spoofing your friend's email and trying to entice you into opening it. With today's email clients, the payload can be delivered whether you open the message completely or not. Hidden graphics in email text are a sneaky way to confirm a valid email address and make you prime spambait.

And the possibilities of introducing a virus are beyond substantial...

If I don't know the person, I nuke it, no questions asked. IF it was important, they'll send it again... and again... and again... until I finally check them out.
