I agree with both Memnoch and Yorick on the main things but cant help thinking there is sheer insanity in the Taliban leadership. The way they treat women is cruel and bizarre. They harbor terrorists who dont seem to care who they kill. Now they destroy their own history. Hitler burned the books he didnt agree with, whats next another Night of the Long Knives? That would be when one group of idiots purges the other group of idiots and consolidates the power.

But it's been pissing down and I just couldn't be bothered. 2 years ago hail wouldn't have stopped me. I had a saying - it doesn't rain inside a nightclub!! I must be getting old

Actually the REAL reason is to keep an eye on you, make sure you don't break anything

Ok, I'm quoting...hehehe Yorick, don't have a cow, I won't make a HABIT of it like some folk we know! (huge grin)

Memny, I'm off to bed, keep missing you! Maybe tomorrow- Raining and you don't go to a party held INDOORS... oh dear (shakes head) You know, you must be getting (whispers) OLD! Or desperate for next level of pretty stars by your name! LOLOLOLOL You know what, though, re - party- I would do same!

Catch you later! In more ways than one!

Yorick- Anglican? I should have guessed! (Episopalian Cloudy here)

Well, as Yorick already pointed out- fundamentalism in the sense of holding to the basic tenets or foundations of ones faith, is not violent or extreme. It's being true to your belief system at it's primary level. I consider myself a fundamentalist in this way. (no ak47 in my pack, I swear!)

As for politics and greed entering the picture, it is unfortunately true. And there are those who claim the fundamentals of their faith but add hate and violence to it for their own purposes. It stops being religion and starts being a cult of the powerhungry.

So fundamentalism shouldn't be a dirty word. It has just been misused, abused and twisted for a long time now.

Cloudy, off the darned soapbox and wondering how she got onto it in the first place....sigh

Now THAT has nothing at all to do with religion, I agree.

Intoxodude, I think the scariest thing is that theyīre not insane. There is no lack of 'logic' to what they do, just fatally flawed logic.

Ever heard of the quote: "There but for the grace of God go I..."

Fear and ignorance. Fear and ignorance. The seed of most, if not all hostility yes?

Best not to dwell on this if itīs upsetting you. (Which it sounds like it certainly is).

Remember:

There is nothing in this scenario that hasnīt happened before.

Your distress will not do anything about it - except give you high blood pressure, lack of sleep and depression.

There are plenty of other statues and memoirs elsewhere from the Buddhist past that the Taliban canīt destroy.

As evident just from this board and from the international outcry, MANY AGREE WITH YOU.

I go numb when I hear about stuff like this. I just think...
"I canīt change this so Iīll focus on what I can do" - Like buying freerange eggs, avoiding purchasing swordfish, eating less meat, recycling, smiling at people, becoming a contributing member of Greenpeace, praying, and now - avoiding any products from Afghanistan.

Wow Conan you dug up an old one of mine! But even more apt now than then. Obviuosly I wont grieve the downfall of the Taliban. I DO hope a more just and equal system comes into being in Afghanistan. The Northern Alliance are no angels either.

This being the very first thread I can see about the Talibans war on life ...I only can tell you that ..
What is worth saving face is often ugly pride at its worst. Taking your own land marks and treasures by blowing them up is a total breach of your ancestrial backrounds. Promising this and that about delievering a fugitive you may never of had control of.. Many years in diplomatic dispute within and without. What do we get. Well now on both sides, we even get less. Saudi, didnt want the go down deal so our friends say. Where do you arrest such a man they contended?? Not in our country. Dig him out yourselves. 3 years of missed communication resulted in devestation. Political correctness as a thread would call it.
Why couldnt we put moneys twards waterways and land growths instead of war. Put it twards Jobs and food. Trees and fruits. Lets look at a time in Isreal where they transformed a valley into life (look it up for yourselves ) How much do you spend training fighters to take innocent life? You therefore comdemn your own selves and life itself within this course. Its an unholy concept to destroy your own culture. Do you think that the stone mountains carved themselves?
If you are busy doing the good things for your people life will ensue.
Peace my freinds.
