Iaido, Kendo and Kenjutso are sword and staff based Martial arts. Some Kung Fu schools do train with weapons, the Nunchako has its own martial art form. Bujutsu, Ninjutsu and Taijutsu are traditionally weapon orientated weapon training martial art forms. Though most countries consider the arming oneself with thoose kind of weapons an offense, and some late studies shows that people with weapon usually gets more hurt than the unarmed due to the fact they are prepaired to use weapon against the aggressor.

And Lennon, try and find a realactment group close by. Some of the more advanced and serious ones train with sword, knife, spear, bow, shield and full armour. At the least you will get a good workout!

Peppersprays are sometimes formed as a long thin cylinder usfeul both for spraying and using as a knucklesupport, but some of these sprays you need a license for. Varies wildly between countries and states for US I think..

Footwear is a good option, if you have time to plan, steel toes are a good defensive weapon against aggressors, sneakers for flight, stiletto heels can be devastating, but only as a first diversion..
Keys as noted before you usually carry with you, good for scratching oopnent and for sticking into eyes, adams apple and so on.

Not all is lost in the art-form...there are just a few people out there taking advantage of the fact that we live in a violent society and they can make money off of it. That is after all, the American Way as they were taught it.
Martial arts is not a game of strong-man and whoever treats it as such is sure to go down. I would bet that if you inquired of the instructors who treat it as a game of strong-man, you'd find out they were losers in competitions.

Watch the re-runs of Kung-Fu...Caine was a humble man...a trait that belongs in the teachings.

One can teach themselves the basics as I mentioned being what I reccommended, through books available from the local library, local bookstores or online purchases.
There is no need to spend top dollar to learn how to bend back a man's pinky finger in order to get him to let go of you or how to twist a wrist and bring a person to their knees (the perfect position for kicking them in the face I might add lol).

Granted, there are basic "freeing techniques" that require a partner for practice but I am sure we all have a close friend or spouse willing to help us learn self defense with no threat of personal harm to them and what we learn with a partner can be learned by both people in private (and fun) surroundings.

Weapons are ONE option...martial arts...may or may not provide an edge but one thing our company here in the Nations one time Murder Capitol found nearly 100% effective in protecting women is the escort of a man! We escort ladies to and from their cars in the parking lot.
Nothing seems to intimidate attackers quite so much as a large muscular man. (An openly armed escort might...but we don't do that)

Lacking an escort (an excellent attacker-repellant), I believe Cloudy did the right thing just by remaining ALERT and acting appropriately to her gut instincts.
She avoided any physical confrontation...the best way to assure her safety by far.

Moni, that's great you had private training with people who took things seriously!

Magik, yes, escorts work and believe it or not at my Univ. a service exists that has two people a male and a female student escort women to the parking lot, bus stop or anyplace else at night. They are based in the library which stays open late. And no, gun is not a realistic option for me, as I would hesitate, no question.

Don't know about the US, but in the UK the most frequent victims of physical attack are 19-26 year old males - NOT women.
