Rehan was silent as he watched the bandit. He felt certain the man was telling him the truth. "So even your own men have become victims... it must be something hidden, or something that can blend in well." He mulled over his thoughts as possibilities churned.
"We should try to lure it out. Whatever it is, it's able to claim its victims in broad daylight and not be noticed. I can act as bait for it." His features turned grim at the thought of this. Was he ready to put his life on the line like that? This monster had claimed several people, and what made him think he wouldn't just be another number to the body count in stories? Determination set in, and he tried to give a reassuring smile to his companions. |

Just for hurting the people, he ought to be the bait. Glaring at their captive, she contemplated this but held her silence. What would her grandma have done at a moment like this? Doubt nagged at her as she pronounced her next words carefully.
"Neither Rehan nor Jared shall be the bait." Do I really have to be the bait? Does it make sense at all to do this? It seemed ludicrous to embark on this crazed plan. If it were some monster or powerful enemy which took up the bait, she could fend it off a little before being caught... what then? She could already seeing the dumbfounded Jared gawking away and the valiant young lad slashing randomly before being slaughtered to death. There was nothing for it, then. "You're going to lead us along the track." Her fists clenched at her sides. And you're going to be the bait. Adele it was, then. Some things, it appeared, did not change with time. Jared took that queue from Acacia that she'd like the prisoner on his feet and walking. He leaned down to help the big guy up. As crazy as it sounded to go looking for some monster in the marsh...at least he knew that at least one of the guards was able to fight...and that did not make things better but it was better than nothing and sitting around for more people to go missing. This had to stop now, and Jared started thinking that maybe Acacia was the one to do it...after all this time.
The prisoner had his chance to refute the order, but he kept his whinings at bay for the moment. Afterall, he was nearly a dead man with the pain in his back, and these guards were not going to let him off easy anyway. If there really was a monster out there...maybe it would eat the guards while he ran away. It could work... "I'll help him walk." Jared finally voiced to show his place in this search. He was no guard. He had nothing to offer them now. It was this bandit that seemed to be the most important ally for the time-being. They began their march through the swamp, the bandit leading the way, at least vocally, to show where his friend had walked and then disappeared a while back. It did not take too long to get there, for it had been just far enough away to tend to personal business without polluting the campsite and avoid attracting creatures to come too close. Of course, the tracks were long gone in this enviroment, but our bandit friend came to a stop at a spot and pronounced it as the place where he had found the footprints end that day. Jared looked around. There was nothing to see but the trees. What purpose did this serve to come all the way over here to look for nothing? Thinking of it, he lifted his boot from the marsh to see if any leeches were there, and was relieved to see that there was not. He'd forgot about swamp dangers. There could very well be an aligator in this murk and they'd walk all over it, not even seeing it until it was too late. He looked at the edge of his borrowed short-sword. Where had this thing been in the world? Surely it had seen more life come and go than even he.

OOC: Larry, I'm assuming you're handling all aspects of this 'thing' that's going to spring on us. So... once Deiter has posted, you can go ahead and give whatever descriptions you like so that we know how to react to it.

OOC>>>I take it that this is your friendly way of telling me that this monster had better be there for us to kill so we can move on from the marshes. My original plan was that it is not where we are currently standing...and it was going to take more time to figure out what it is...
Do you and Deiter want me to just get it over with and end this mystery? I'll do it however you and he want it.

OOC: I'm okay either way, Larry; just wanted to have a sense of how my posts should go, both in terms of timing and action. Anyway, next up is Deiter's turn, then yours and mine, etc.

Rehan watched the bandit carefully. Is this really the spot? I don't see anything out of place... His eyes narrowed at the thought of the man trying to trick them.
This was his first time in a marsh, and followed Jared's example at checking his boots. Relieved to not find anything, he made his way over to the bandit so the man could look him in the eye. "I hope you're not lying about this." He placed his blade against the man's neck. "Because if you are..." Rehan let his words hang in the air. |

The bandit scowled at being called a liar because of this.
"Are you crazy! I told you this was a month ago, and don't you think we searched this place over several times looking for him? We finally decided that we had no answers so we just sorta forgot about it. If you were expecting to..." And the bandit stopped, and stared at something in the distance, almost confused. Jared looked out towards where the bandit was peering, and saw nothing but some Sicamores and Black Willow trees. Not an animal, bird, or anything else in sight. "What you looking at?" The bandit now looked a bit worried to say. They'd certainly think that he was just stalling for time. "I don't know if my eyes deceive me, but I swear, I saw a bird on yonder tree...and it looked like it was laying down, or its head was stuck in a hole or something...maybe about to fall, but then it was gone." "And I swear that your head will be the next to fall, if you're lying." The words were out even before she had considered them, as she drew out her blade and pressed the tip against the bandit's back.
Adele is coming back. Relief and horror struggled in her heart as she continued speaking in the once-forgotten, foreign voice. "Move on!" Barely noticing her two companions, she shoved him on with her right hand, her left holding the hilt of her longsword firmly. |

The bandit knew better than to mess with this one. There was a tone to her voice...a fire in her eye that told him that she'd killed many times before, and that seriousness was all she was dealing in right now. He did so, albeit in much pain and feeling faint for the blood loss. However, what could he do? This crazy bitch was going to kill him the moment she was through with him anyway. Maybe some monster out there would have more mercy on him and kill him quicker. Thus, he marched.
Jared said nothing. He was seeing a side of this soldier lady that proved why she was a soldier...and definately the one in command here. He watched Acacia lead the bandit off towards the trees that he'd been staring at, wondering what was to happen next. "Is she always like this?" he asked Rehan, jokingly. The bandit crept nearer to the tree that he'd seen something bizarre occur. They got right up to the very tree, and looked at it, but saw nothing. ... Why did he feel so tired? He figured it was the wound he'd received. That damned woman was letting him die right here! He could not keep his eyes open, and realized that eternal sleep was about to take him. He sat down at the base of the tree and was about to cuss her with the last few words he had before falling under, but that is when he realized that she had fallen to her knees beside him, yawning. "What's wrong with...(yawn)...you! I...(yawn) need a ...rest..." OOC>>>Acacia and the bandit feel the effects of drowsiness overtaking them. "What's she doing...laying down?...Rehan...I think something's wrong!" Jared jumped up and looked to Rehan for guidance as to what he thought should be done. Why was Acacia and the bad guy just...falling down like they were drunk?
