hey, does anyone know of any other Wizardry-type fantasy roleplaying computer/nintendo games? I'm not talking about anime-like, bubbly Final Fantasy-type crap, or cheesy Diablo-type crap, but rather the crawling through scary dungeons with a group of characters, fighting off scary creatures and solving puzzles type stuff

I can't think of many... the problem with most RPG's is that they are so damn cheesy, the Wizardry series is the only one I can think of. There's gotta be more out there than Wizardry, c'mon!

If you haven't played the Super Nintendo version of Wizardry V, you are missing out... Get a SNES Emulator and the ROM if you have to, but play it. The better graphics and european theme give the game a fantastic, majestic atmosphere, and Wizardry V was one of the hardest and best Wizardries.

I use to feel like an old timer CRPGer (47) until I got a part time job at Software Ect. As far as CRPG's go, they get a wide diversity of players (customers). The most interesting was one customer I had never seen. His 30-something wife, who is probably one of the most beautiful woman I have ever seen (and I use to work in Television) would come in once a month and ask for the lastest CRPG.

Anywhoz I have been playing CRPS since that great TI99 RPG game (can't remember the name, damn my memory). When I got my apple I then was introduced to Wizardry 1, and was hooked. Might and Magic kept me on the string. And the first Land Of Lore got me excited again. Most of the recent RPG's (Fallout, Anvil, Stonekeep, Ultima. anachronox, Balders, Diablo etc) I played, but none of those games have had me so enveloped as Wiz 8.

Living in California with so many things to do, it's sometimes hard to sit at the screen. But this game has me. I hope to carry on future discussions with you all.

ROA - Realms of Arkania? That game ruled!

I think RoA (DSA) was the baby of Guido Henkel who left Attic after finishing part 3. It is one of my alltime favourites, part 2 I liked most. And it is one of the very few games that let you import parties in later parts...awesome, I love that.

Realms of Arkania was incredible. Like you, my favorite one was Star Trail (the second one). Star Trail was/is my favorite game. Ever. Hands down. (Though Wizardry 8 is rapidly catching up).

I run - I think the only - Realms of Arkania...

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/realmsofarkania/

Sir-Tech ended up dropping ROA after 3 (for reasons someone else stated, about the person leaving).

Another company was gonna pick up and do a Arkania game (which would have nothing to do with the other ROA games...)

Though they found the same fate as Wizardry 8. Just as the game was nearing completion, their publisher went under.

To see more, and it looks incredibly beautiful, check out:

Yep, Realms of Arkania. One of the few series with the possibility to import parties from a former part. I just did a short research for Guido Henkel who was the main responsible for RoA. He then took part in the production of Planescape Torment, the last game I wrote a huge walkthrough for (http://www.soulbox.de/torment.html), then he did a strategical medival game I think. He was the driving force behind LMK, "Lady, Mage and Knight", a game that seemed to become the heaven for old RoA-fans, but err...Guido left and now the game seems to have 'snowwhite-status'. I just had a look at the homepage, and it looks pretty abandoned, last update 10/28/1998...*sniff*:

Howdy Folks!

How refreshing it is that I find people like myself that enjoy the fun and wonder that a good computer game can give. I am 36 years old and, like many of you, cut my teeth on Wizardry, Bard's Tale, the AD&D Gold Box series and all the others that came after. I use to have a Commodore 64 and then an Amiga (although there wasn't too much support for the Amiga, unfortunately).

I have read all of the posts on here and just seeing the names of all those great games brings back such great memories of playing untill all hours of the morning and getting totally immersed in a game. One of my favs of long ago was Darklands. It had such an atmosphere!

Well...I'll be getting back to Wiz8 and I'll be seeing you all in the halls!

Wow! It's really nice to see such a multi-generational group here. And, as well, a good mix of boy/girl too.

Anyway, I'm 25, a teacher, and live in Poland
via Australia (all over)
via Houston (worst by far, sorry if I offend)
via Chicago
via Scotrun, PN
via Dallas
via Harlingen, TX
via Toms River, NJ
via Swampscott, MA

I move around a bit, no? Anyway...fell in love with those weird seahorse-looking creatures (dragons I suppose) in the Atari 2600 game "Adventure" and I've been 'wasting' hard drive space ever since.

Well met and good luck!
