CNN says that their car (blue 1990 Chevy Caprice) was modified to allow someone to lie down in the trunk and fire through an opening. As to the weapon:

A law enforcement source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a gun found in the suspects' car is a ballistic match for the .223-caliber rounds used in the killings. The bullets were the fatal calling card in a series of sniper attacks that began Oct. 2, with the killing of James D. Martin in a grocery store parking lot in Wheaton, Md.

The weapon found in the Chevrolet Caprice was a Bushmaster, according to a law enforcement source. Bushmaster received an inquiry Thursday from the federal Bureau of Tobacco, Alcohol and Firearms about a specific AR-15 that was sold last June to a distributor in Washington state, said Allen Faraday, a company executive in Windham, Maine.

Buy them back off everyone. Everyone who then possesses one is thus a criminal.

Then you can arrest and imprison a criminal before they commit violent crime. For if guns are illegal and no-one has a gun, why else would they need a gun, if not to commit another crime?
Wishful thinking...I've already detailed how guns are better for a properly educated society than an "i'm bigger than you" society; there is a perfectly legitimate reason for owning guns - self defence. And I'm not even going to get into the nonsense about hunters and farmers...

Yorick, how about Switzerland, where every able-bodied adult male owns an assault weapon, and the crime rate is extremely low? Se John MacPhee's excellent La Place De La Concorde Suisse

Let it be said again, for the thousanth time. The goal is harm REDUCTION, not elimination. Your point is irrelevent to what is being attempted. Yes if someone tries hard enough, they'll get a gun, but the average Joe won't. The suicidal, or the child killer, or the postman.

I haven't read that. That's interesting news.

Let's look at why every able bodied male possess a weapon, and we may understand the differences between the cultures and the prevalence of violent crime.

Firstly, like Singapore and Israel, every adult male serves in the army. Compulsorily. The gun is to protect the tiny nation from external threat, not a 'dictatorial government'. Look at their history. Their neighbours are France and Germany!!

Switzerland is arguably the most democratic nation on earth. I'm told the citizens must pass certain laws. The citizens keep rejecting the governments desire to be either part of the United Nations, or part of the Euro Union. I was in Switzerland for a little while. Nice place, nice people. Amazing unity despite the barriers of language. Switzerland is indeed an enigma.

(pic snipped)
This is the guy we're talking about. Born as John Williams, who turned to the islam and changed Williams into Muhammad. He's also a veteran of the gulfwar.
That's the guy...the boy with him is a 17 year old Jamaican national that he kind of adopted after having a relationship with the boy's mother. The ballistics evidence in the Montgomery AL case did not match with the sniper shootings but as Attalus posted, the gun used in the sniper killings was in the car these men were in when they were caught without incident (they were sleeping) in a Maryland rest stop on I-70. The fingerprints they retreived in AL were on a gun magazine and belonged to the boy, John Lee Malvo.

For those of you who were wondering about their money demands earlier in this thread, they had stolen a credit card in the AL burglary and wanted the money deposited to that account. Not that it would have worked lol.

Nope. Not even then.

British cops don't have guns. Only the feds I believe. And those in Northern Ireland. Correct me if I'm wrong you British people.... (as if they need encouragement)
That is untrue. Bobbies, as a rule, don't carry but scotland yard certainly does, and I heard from a coworker that is from england (and still has relatives there) that they are arming bobbies for certain jurisdictions.
Perhaps you should read my post. Scotland Yard - Bobbies, they are all the same thing!

Isn't it interesting that he wasn't a military sniper or special forces.

One military analyst before they were captured said if he was military, most likely he was a "wanna be". Funny that the retired officer seems to have hit it, while the other serial killer experts missed in their profiles.
I don't know where you are getting your information from Ronn but in the Times today they report that he was in the US army between 1985-1995. He won an expert marksmanship badge.

If I were being mischievious I might point out that they were caught because of a fingerprint on a 'gun appreciation magazine' but I would never do that!

A mischevious Donut huh - well I think that is something that has a presidence from recent history .

I see from my paper today that Australia is intending to tighten its firearms laws to further limit access to several calibres of handguns that are still available to the public.
