You could do one of the backgrounds as more orange, to kind of give it the feeling of fire, which western civilization often associates with the underworld.

I've been thinking about doing something similar. I kind of was working on it for the wolf pic for the collaborataion- all land animals would get a green background, then I could do a blue background for undersea, something dark for underground dwellers. I haven't thought it out too far, but that would certainly be a lot easier than finding different and exciting backgrounds for pictures that I don't want to make into a whole 3D scene. (Plus, it's a lot nicer than the boring black, which is in itself a lot nicer than let's say cream or bright red for a default background color.)

It would definitely look better than just boring ol' black, but one thing I am not sure about is what to do with those creatures that can be encountered in several places. For example, sprites would be fine with a green background (or I could just paste the small pic onto my forest picture); but a giant rat could be encountered in both the forest or in a dungeon... Two versions of this small picture, then?
But a simple colored background would be a simple way of adding some kind of background, I guess...

That's the dilemma that I ran into, plus I kind of felt that I was categorizing all of the creatures as different colors in Magic: the Gathering.
![]() ![]() ![]() So, my working theory has been, leave the background black, then the designer could paste the subject onto whatever background they wanted. ![]() ![]() |

Possibly, but its not hard to get a cut-n-paste of the walls and backdrop that occur where the picture would be, and add this to the picture for instant "in game" backgrounds.

That's what I'm saying though, I think it's super-easy, 'cause I do a lot with graphics in and out of DC. But, my experience has been that people will use whatever they get without modifying. (Of course, there are always a couple who are willing to modify the art, but they are the exception that proves the rule.)
I guess that it's good for me- I know that I can do lots of pictures for popular subjects and there is a good chance they might get used. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Most likely, its viewed as you should not modify someone elses artwork. I am of the opinion that someone who is working in a commercial/business project NOT have rights to change and/or use but someone who is a fellow DC user could use mine.
I'm hoping to get so I can do moderately good artwork for the entire art requirements for the game, and have my own style for it. So, I prolly won't use much in the way of other ppls work, tho. ST

Actually, you bring up a valid point about use. I think I will have to clear up the usage rights before the next release. Under the GPL license, the art is still copyright of the artist, but we give permission for others to use and modify, but if they modify, they have to make available for free and public use. Though, if someone could figure out how to make money with that art, I'd gladly work out a generous deal with them.

Not sure I'd want people modifying my stuff...
![]() But anyway, I added a simple reddish background for the nupperibo - looks kind of interesting now (its bluish shadows clash with the red).
