My own Independent Research (note that this site details many myths and counter-myths of coffee) confirms two things that concern me:
1. Coffee raises stress levels all day, which results in poor metabolism, and
2. "When insulin sensitivity goes down, this indicates that your body is less able to take blood sugar into the cells to be used for energy ... Caffeine decreased insulin sensitivity by 15%, a significant decline compared to placebo. Plus, stress hormone levels in the blood increased with caffeine. Blood pressure increased to a small degree as well" (see link above - the source article stating this is hyperlinked about 64% of the way down the page).

So, M.D.'s, what say you?

Oh, to the extent it helps you analyze my personal situation, I drink both coffee and tea sans sugar or cream 99% of the time.
Interseting Timber. I agree with Attalus, I don´t see how changing from coffe to tea would make you loose weight. Unless you gave up on suger and/or milk. I´m not sure about how caffeine effects insulin sensitivity but I do now caffeine shunts metabolism towards burning fatty acids instead of glucose, therefore it does not matter that insulin sensitivity lowers (unless it is a chronic loss) since it will be glucagone that will be secreted instead of insulin. And AFAIK it is not entirely true to say "coffe raises stress levels". "It exaggerates the response to stress" would be more correct.

Oh and I disagree with some of the things Dr. Perricone says as well. His answer to acne is very vague and seems to be sale talks. It has been shown that lowmolecular anti-oxidants give some protection of aging, but contrary to what Perricone says no long term efficiacy studies have been conducted. BUt in the mean time, cointinue to eat vitamines C and E. Lipoic acid is not as prominent in this area as the vitamines.

Here´s a good article.

Edit: Hi MagiK. Nice to see you again. And yes, we have missed you.

Thanks, Attalus. I'm trying to limit carbs as well. As a vegetarian, it's extremely difficult - though I am ever more creative all the time.

Dr. Perricone (and others) say the worst thing you can do is eat sugary snacks before bedtime. Makes sense. Does scotch count???

Thanks to you, too, Willow, and I'll certainly check the article out.

Actually I would say the worst time to eat a snack is before a workout. And go easy on the alcohol before bedtime. It increases brain activity you know. And that is not a good thing in men, since you are not used to it! LLAO!!!

CD, I'm mostly doing the same old thing, work and housekeeping but Nacht and I are starting to discuss wedding dates and plans now, too.... oooh..speaking of stress levels! LOL

Wow,that's a lot of interesting info TL, Attalus and Willow! I did wonder if maybe the 'losing weight' part of not drinking coffee had something to do with caffeine, although tea does have some in it.

MagiK, sounds like you have a really clumsy cable company! They break cables alot, it seems! Hope they fix you up on Tuesday! So, you're all moved in?

So, I should undertake efforts to start drinking as soon as I get home rather than waiting? Okay. Not before a workout - is that some joke (because of cramps, etc) or is there some other connection. I don't eat before I workout because it's hard enough to get my lazy bum to the gym already.

Not a joke and not a myth (not like "wait half an hour before going into the water after eating"). There is a simple reason. When you workout your body will shut down some of the circulatory system to shunt the blood to the necessary locations, the muscles. Therefore your gastro-intestinal system will loose it´s blood flow and your body will not be able to break down the food for energy. However, if you eat 2-3 hours before your body will have absorbed almost all the energy and there is no disadvantage to shunt the blood from your gastro-intestinal tract. Logical huh? Willow .... the only justifiable and resonable response to this that I can come up with is

Cloudy: Yep, All my stuff is in boxes or pieces at Colleens house. Her Divorce hearing is in early June, unless her Ex and his lawyers decide to settle. Once that is done, we will be moving to a new place and selling the old one...mainly because 5000+ sq. feet is too dang big for just two people.....not to mention that I would like to be contributing something to our combined home...I can't even make her monthly mortgage payment....Might seem silly to some people, but for me to feel at home, I need to know that I contributed to it...not like Im living off my girl friend.
