When I was in high school, the coolest kid in the class ahead of me had a '65 GTO, metallic olive with an in-hood tachometer. I don't know what engine it had (I wasn't invited when he popped the hood) but that was the first car that I really lusted after. Still do, come to think of it.

GTO...cool car. Anyone else see Vin Diesels latest films Fast and the Furious, and xXx? This guy is a major GTO freak...best part of those two movies, in fact.

Cerek, one of my best memories of the 455 was a Ram Air IV Trans Am. A friend of mine took me a ride down old Keene road (think narrow country road) so fast the dashed line blurred into a solid line! Awesome car.

From that era, my dad owned brand new (he was a GM employee) an Impala with a 327/350hp V8. Do *not* underestimate these cars! This car was %$@# fast! He routinely travelled 100mph+ on two lane highways...one time the cops chased him for MILES before he realized there was one behind him.

Absynthe With all due respect to the Honda tuners, $65,000 worth of engine tuning will not give you the equal of $65K of work on a classic V8.

And the best line in those movies: "You owe me a 10 second car"

Timber, wrt the new vs the old...a lot of people are afraid of modern engine controls but really if you take the effort to understand the systems it's actually easier to make these puppies sit up and sing. I'm a mechanic by trade, and I must say that I will take any motor and install engine electronics (ie, electronic ingition and fuel injection) that will allow it to kick the @$$ of any equivalent carbureted motor, with FAR less effort *and* expense...

You can purchase software for your PC, fairly cheaply I might add, to reprogram the PROM in your cars computer allowing you to recalibrate fuel and spark advance curves...no rejetting or wrenching necessary. BMW actually makes this process easy, if you have the right tools. You can reprogram their processors right in the car.

And since EFI systems have been around for a while, it's easy to get otherwise expensive parts fairly cheaply from the wrecking yards. (Injectors and such last a long long time, and don't often wear out)

It's way too bad you live in Canada - I could use a trustworthy mechanic who knows his schmidt.

It's a tragedy that things are the same all over. We really don't do a good job promoting our profession, it has a real bad rep. Too many people come in *expecting* to get ripped off.

My father just got a 73 Convertible Corvette that he's putting a lot of work into. Great Cars. BUt, I must point out that I'm in the "almost 30" crowd and I was getting crap from MY parents about how my generation would never see the likes of these great cars. *sigh*
Let's here it for the "Goat"

I agree with that 100%! The only poster I have in my shop is of a blown 455 in a 69 442, underneath it says "Nothing beats cubic"

Is that "1978 Automobiles," or "78 RPM records"?
