And having a laugh together is the best way to build a rapport.

Absolutely. Unfortunately, far too many guys are *way* too serious when using lines. I'm not above using lines to get a laugh, but I make sure it's clear that I'm joking or trying to break the ice.

I think my dislike of "lines" came from a night at a fair when some little weasel stepped on the back of my shoe, taking it off my foot and using the line "Hey! Don't I know you from somewhere?" when I turned around to see who did it.
I answered him "I don't think so!" as I put my shoe back on and walked away but EVERY corner I turned, there he was, with the same line, over and over again for a few hours until I finally left the fair because his stalking me was scary (I was 15 years old and miles away from home at night) and to keep from punching his little face in which might have gotten me arrested and taken to juvenile for the night.

I guess there are times when the use of lines have been "cute" but for some reason, I've always dubbed guys who use them in an honest attempt to make the pick up as Losers.
