You know, Davros, you make a good point. After 24 hours of arguing this, I actually lost track of the real point didn't I?

The original point was whether or not it was proper for the US to make the statement to Canada because it seemed to some that the American government was happy with those who agreed with it and were unhappy with those who opposed it, but should pretend otherwise.

For some reason it was thought that there was no reason to communicate the views officially despite the continual and long running practice of doing just this. My answer was yes that it was proper because that is the way nations interact. In fact my original argument was that it's either ok for everyone to make these diplomatic statements, or it's ok from no one.

To answer your question, yes Mark and Masklinn did seem quite upset with that. See our lengthy interchanges for details....lol.

Only later in the thread did what was actually said come under scrutiny, and the indignation kicked in when the statements of high level government officials from each side were compared.

I don't think anyone has had a doubt about the position of any the nations that have been at the forefront of the Iraqi situation for the past several months, nor have any of the nations at the forefront been shy about making their dissatisfaction known through diplomatic and public channels. Some have been more diplomatic than others.

There will be heck to pay on both sides of this issue in the years to come, but should each ignore it's opposition now and just get on with our respective businesses now? Nope, these things will have to be hashed out, and it's better done now than later.

Pat Buchanan? He's a news commentator, so what he says may have been rude, but it is certainly not as important as statement from a government official from either side.

It's certainly fitting in some places.

Wow! This sure got out of control real fast, now didn't it.

The original statement was neither offensive or insulting to me as a Canadian, but I did find it childish. The comments by Canadian officials,...well they're Canadian officials and I think most Canadians can certainly understand that.

It wasn't necessarily wrong but it didn't need to be said. Government officials from two countries such as Canada and the USA, trading insults is no better than 2 5 year olds on the playground seeing who can get the last insult in, before the other goes home crying.

Herb Dhaliwal certainly had no right to make such a comment, and IMHO only did so because of the current Softwood Lumber dispute. His childish behaviour didn't help the issue.

I wouldn't expect that kind of behaviour from responsible adults, nevermind the fact that they are representing two seperate nations but the excuse "he started it!" doesn't wash. Two wrongs don't make a right.

What insults were traded?

The only insults in this thread were from Canadian government officials.

Pat Buchanan is a media person, and while what he said might be considered rude, it was nothing compared to what the Canadian officials actually said.

EDIT - I just reread this, and it seems much harsher than I intended when I posted it last night.... sorry.

I know you don't agree with what was said because you've stated that very clearly. I also know I'm lucky that something similarly obnoxious said by a US official hasn't gotten out yet.

Their were several US senators as well as Hillary Clinton who said some insulting remarks as well as false acusations awhile back after 9/11. If dig hard enough you can find many remarks by US officials.

Well, I didn't mean it in the sense that no one from the US has EVER said anything stupid or inflammatory... I meant it regarding the issues related to this thread.

I replied to your PM Ronn, but not sure if you'll get it, if not let me know. Not too sure is the server accepted it.

Perhaps it's what CBC is reporting. We all know how biased the media can be.
