I've honestly never heard them, but people keep telling me I need to expand my musical tastes (despite the fact that I like everything except country, rap, and any music from the late 1990's - early 2000's).

So, who are they? What genre? My tastes center around classic 1960's-1980's rock for the most part, so I'm wondering if I would like them.

My Dying Bride's early albums (ie. Turn Loose the Swans era), are my favorite albums ever, and Morbid Angel are also excellent.

They are not for the light hearted though.

I've been listening to rock/metal/whatever you wanna call it since around '92 when I was 7.

My favorite would have to be either Poison The Well(from right here in FL!) or Mushroomhead.

Have CDs/cassettes (yes, it was ages ago ) of them all.
Arcturus is VERY good, one of my favourite bands in the genre - talented musicians... I love that album. Mmmmmmmmm, Du Nordavind...

Seen Morbid Angel and My Dying Bride live - I used to be crazy about one of those old MDB albums, the one that had The Forever People on it (one of the best song titles ever, surely ). Morbid Angel's OK, though the singer, whatshisname... I mean the Nazi, is a complete prick. I love their song Hatework.

Ulver - I know their first three albums were completely eclectic - one death, one black, one folksy. I have the folky one, and I completely LOVE it. Great, great album. That 16 second song Ord is just brilliant, beautiful singing. Not to impressed with the thing they did on Blake's The Marriage of Heaven And Hell though.

Opeth is great of course, another classic band.

Still, if I would have to choose a BM band that I really loved (yah, I grew over the whole black metal thing a few years ago - still like the music on occasion tho). Anyway, the two bands that I really loved the most were Satyricon and Emperor. Emperor for being the most inventive, brilliant band around (still think In the Nightside Eclipse was genius, also loved the later records) and Satyricon ... just for being Satyricon. I don't know all the newer stuff they did (was warned for that) but The Shadowthrone is magnificent.

Apart from Morbid Angel you named very melodic bands, atmospheric, lots of chords etc... Personally, that's the genre I can bear the most now, but I used to have a period where I liked the really dirty-sounding, gravelly bands, like Burzum and Darkthrone. Still nice to listen to occasionally, but I hardly ever do. These days, the only thing remaining from those days that I still listen to are things like Arcana, Wongraven, and especially, THE MASTER Raison D'ętre. Cold Meat Industry bands mostly - don't know if you're familiar with that record company.

Oh Katherine - have been meaning to ask you if you like London After Midnight? That's one of my favourite older bands...

Also, do you listen to more modern Goth bands at all, or just older stuff? I'm wondering if you know/like things like Faith And The Muse and Switchblade Symphony. Especially the latter is one of my favourites.
And do you listen to things like Fields, Sisters, The Mission? I saw the Mission live recently - it was simply amazing!
(wrote a short report of it here, if you're interested )

It's a bit risky, but...I love MANOWAR!!!

They are posers, they are macho and they are definitely not cool. But I love the music.
Aviendha or Melusine: do you know Haggard? It's an orchestra-band from Germany(about 16 members or so), they're great.

Debiler - I certainly know Haggard! Quite well in fact - I must be off now as I'm visiting relatives there, but I will get back to it when I return - it's quite a nice story!
