Errmmm Here's one that's been bothering me. As tides go up and down, and the amount they go up and down by varies, where the hell do you measure sea level from?

The most straightforward measurements of sea level are made by tide gauges. These instruments, usually placed on piers, measure the height of the sea relative to a nearby geodetic benchmark
