Plus you are DLing all the data that would normally be on the CD's. Then you need more room for an actual installation. So it would sound abour right from a direct download site.

[/QUOTE]I was under the impression that you couldn't - that game performance would deteriorate significantly if you installed them on an external HD. I can play CivIII on an external drive (connected via USB 2.0) but anything more than that, I think I would be struggling. Unless you've done it and it works?

No, I haven't myself so I'm not sure how well it works.

I do have another possible solution for you though.

You could get a mini-external hard drive (really portable and compact), which hold up to 40 gigs, iirc, and you could put some of your other files (I assume work files) onto that. I know it's not perfect, but that's about the best that can be offered, aside from a independant desktop machine for your games.
