For Rhianneth
Terrakis The steady appraisal of his gaze gives no sign of either approval or contempt as she struggles to remain in possession of herself but his eyes do not waver in the fixed intensity of their stare. He pauses in his words only long enough to ensure that she will hear them and then continues unconcerned bout her emotional state. “Yes, woman, your freedom came at a very high price. Three of your companions have lost their lives and the venomous hag who petrified you has lost her horde and her power. Of course, these pitiful lives are not the price which bought your freedom, woman.” Noting the expression on her face he continues, “You are free because a great gift has been placed in my hands by one who has taken an interest in you.” Reaching into a pocket, his fingers withdraw an object, a small band of wood that seems not merely tiny but insignificant and fragile within the mighty fingers that hold it with a surprising delicacy. The movements of the great giant grow cautious as he holds the wooden ring out that all might see it. “This is the prize, woman, that thing whose value was great enough to persuade me to free from your stone prison rather than dashing it to pieces. This is the victorious ring whose silent presence sustained the Enemy in his struggle against our father. No longer shall its might contend against the children of Shadow.” His voice, heavy with emotion, falls silent a moment as he replaces the ring in its pocket with the same measured care used to withdraw it. Looking once more at this Rhianneth, he continues, “You are free, woman, because of one who was lonely longed for a pleasant memento of a better time. So lonely, in fact, that he bore the terrible burning of the ring to bear it to me that you might be freed.” The air near Rhianneth stirs slightly, and a sound, faint at first, grows in volume. There is a familiarity about the sound, but also something different, something dark and brooding that had not been there in the previous game. That such is the case is to be expected, of course, or would be if any save this curious pocket of sound within air knew that it had been enfolded since the fall of the Tower until very recent days within the mocking whispers of the Devouring Wind. Be that as it may, however, this strangely brooding sound finds words with which to express itself, and that too is hardly surprising given its nature. “Rhianneth!” it says, “Hi, I’m Larry’s echo!” Laughter breaks out among the assembled giants at the stunned expression upon the woman’s face and even the mirth of these creatures has a cruel sound about it. The mirth itself, fades quickly, for one thing yet must be done. “I said that three of your party lost their lives because of you, woman. That is true, but only two of those lives have been taken.” His eyes do not leave the woman as he speaks the order, “Finish it!” An iron mallet of enormous size swings with brutal swiftness and a single blow is struck and the petrified form of the Possessor is reduced to broken shards of stone and dispersing motes of dust. All is silent for a moment save for the lingering notes of the mallet’s blow and the falling of broken stone. Terrakis then addresses the woman once more, “You, of course, are tired and shall need to rest.” Turning to one of his brothers he says, “Show her to a suitable chamber.” _________________________________ DMs Note - Larry’s echo was a character in his own right in the original game, and one that was too cool not to bring into this story in some way. Of course, only one person can adequately play such a character as this and so I turn Echo over to Larry, the one who created him. • The Windbringer’s ring is now in the possession of Terrakis. • The Possessor has been destroyed. • Rhianneth - Terrakis was correct. You are not only exhausted, but you also will need at least a few day’s rest before you can even think of casting spells. The chamber set aside for you is reasonably private and is comfortable by the harsh standards of the Giants, which in human terms means not very. This arrangement should also allow you and Larry to roleplay a bit without waiting for me to post for a couple days. I’ll try and have a PM out to you tomorrow. |

OOC>>> Okay, mega post coming up, I hope nobody really minds… after all, I am the Queen of Soap Operas and Drama
Rhianneth Unseeing and weary, she lowered herself onto the cool floor and leaning against the icy walls of the ‘chamber’. Try as she might, she could not stay conscious, so drained was she from the immense struggle for her will in the battle against the mighty giant. Soon, she was floating, flying around the chamber, her long dark brown hair flowing freely, yet never hindering her sight of the glowing light… ”Rhianneth, my child… are you so lost to me?” ~ It was he! How had he come in? Did she want to see him? ”My child, have you no heart? Did you not hear that monster?” ~ He was appealing to her, and she fought him as hard as she could… or did she want to? ~ ”Your companions were sacrificed for you. Do you really feel nothing?” She bit her lip, refusing to answer. ”Why are you so bitter, Rhianneth?” ”WHY?” ~ She spun around, her eyes ablaze with hatred ~ ”How can you ask such a ridiculous question?” ~ Her fists clenched in acute tension ~ ”I wonder that I had a father like you.” ~ It was so terrible, trying to keep the contempt from her voice, knowing how much it hurt him – and consequently, herself. He was not to blame… and yet… ”You know that it was your mother’s fault, that Mistral’s mother died. Yes, your mother put in the poison in Eilonwy’s medicine… all because she was promised a great sum of money by Meldrin, that heartless sea elf.” ~ He shook his head wretchedly ~ ”Don’t you see that we are in the wrong?” ~ There was a tremor in his almost desperate voice ~ ”Don’t let your imagination mislead you!” ”You chose to kill your wife and yourself, and leave behind an orphan to fend for herself!” ~ She screamed at him, the pain threatening to choke her ~ ”What sort of self-righteous traitor are you?!” ~ She felt the wrath lifting her higher and higher, circling her in a warm embrace ~ ”I hate her! She had everything, father…” ~ A sneering tone as she pronounced the last word ~ ”She was raised by the best teachers in fighting and magics, then she won the love of a bumbling ranger…” ~ Her eyes turned jade green at this moment ~ ”… a love she then chose to trample upon, and abandon, because of her mortal enemy, Arrakis.” ~ Gesturing about herself ~ ”And even in death, she enjoys a pleasanter surrounding than myself now!” ”Even if you hate her… “ ~ He gazed upon her helplessly ~ ”What about your companions? They have done you no wrong, and in fact aided you, in your times of danger.” ~ The reproach in his voice was unmistakable ~ ”Are you so twisted now by the thought of revenge, that you no longer know when you should feel gratitude and reciprocate by avenging your allies?” Her mouth opened for a swift retort, but something – a little prick at the back of her head - held her back. When she finally spoke, her voice was cold ~ ”I don’t need you to tell me when I should rejoice in the concern of others.” ~ Slowly, she was dropping back to the ground ~ ”Leave me alone, I’m bothered enough by my situation now without your nagging and fussing.” ”I will leave you of course, if you wish it.” ~ He would not know how the sad tone of his voice drew the tears to her eyes as she defiantly turned away ~ ”It has been hard on you, and I am sorry that I caused you all this misery.” ~ A little pause, then hesitantly ~ ”Goodbye, Rhianneth. Perhaps this is the last time I will ever meet you.” ~ She knew then, it was not a perhaps. It was a given. Even before she hastily looked back, she knew it was too late. He was gone. ”NOOOOOO!!!” ~ What had she done? How could she claim to love him and yet torment him with such hurtful words? And now, he was separated from her forever... In reality, her tearful eyes opened, sending another stream of tears coursing down her cheeks unchecked. Misery contorted her pallid face as she realised that though it had been a dream, it was very likely that contact with her father had been severed from now on. As Ruby spoke, the elf halted his walk, and turned to see brendon slowly revert to his previous form, as he stammered out what he could remember, Elethias tried to think back to his classes in the bladesinger school he had apprenticed in, those returned from stony prisons often failed to survive the transformation, but those that did survive it were normally weak for some time afterwards, brendon would be weak as a kitten for some time to come. Though he didn't trust her poisoned words and the lies in them he knew, as the best liars know, that the most effective falsehood is often hidden in shades of truth, another weapon to deal with the giant and it's power... he would need the Fabled One Ping of Zyrok (which was even more powerful than the One Ring), but only fools and children believed stories of a Ping that could search one out anywhere in the forums, no there must be another weapon that could be turned to their use... As he was thinking he got some water and offered it to brendon, chastizing him for being careless, buthis eyes spoke his true feelings, that it was good to have one of his short time companions back, even if he had only briefly been a comapanion. Laughter, far in the distance, echoes around the carvern walls...never having an origin yet finding their destination in the ears of the captive.
Echo "Rhianneth...ianneth...neth.... What would you have?...you have?...have?... I am but an echo, without a master...without a master...master... Though I remember you!...remember you!...you! [ 01-09-2004, 05:18 PM: Message edited by: Larry_OHF ] |

That voice! ~ She got to her feet, staggering slightly as she surveyed the chamber, trying to pinpoint the epicentre of the echo. "I'm here... Larry..." ~ And she hurriedly brushed the back of her hand across her eyes and cheeks. |

OOC>>>What is written in blue is the current Echo. What's written in ghostwhite are the echoes of Larry's posts long ago.
Echo "Lary is dead...is dead...dead..." he felt around for something to hold onto for support, but was only rewarded with cold stone. Cold...the stone...? Larry smiled...maybe he had won after all! Then, he took his last breath. "I am the Echo of his life...his life...life..." One Moderator to rule them all, One forum to play in, one Forum to bring them all and in the RP world bind them. "You were once welcome in my master's tower...master's tower...tower..." ...I can use somebody like you who knows true power....Hmmm, and fiesty, too! I like you more, already...Rhianneth it is, then! Everybody! Let's welcome Rhianneth into our tower. "What would you have?...you have?...have?..." Rhianneth
She circled the chamber cautiously, hands folded across her chest ~ Larry truly dead... ~ It was a bitter thought, that she had come so far only to have the truth verified by none other than the echo of his voice ~ Not that I didn't know... but I hoped against hope... and now... ~ She exhaled slowly ~ ... all hope is gone. Mistral has won. What was there left to do, but accept this mocking reality? How could she argue against the heavens if they had shown their favour was with that raven-haired kensai-mage? And what of those companions, as Father had appealed to me to avenge? Should I not save them, now that I have come so far? It was incredible that her head was still heavy with doubts, even after that long, fitful sleep, and to top it off, here was the echo, beckoning to her, expecting an answer. Well, she would parry the questions as long as she could ~ I need all the time I can get, to clear my thoughts... "I think I could ask you the same question." ~ Her tone was forcedly calm ~ "What would you have, Echo?" |

Echo
The laughter seemed to resonate from the rock itself, bouncing from one to another in a ghostly game of catch. "You and I, the same thing...same thing...thing..." "Do what you know you must!...you must!...must!..." "Then the events to follow will be as we wish...we wish...wish..." "Do not let Brendon fall!...Brendon fall!...fall!..." "Or we will lose...will lose...lose..." |

Why is it that his words make little sense to me? ~ She frowned, as she struggled to understand him ~ Is Larry not turned evil? Why would he want to help Brendon? ~ It was baffling, annoying, and she hated being in the dark ~ Has something happened, that I am not aware of? "And... what is in it for me, Echo?" ~ She tried to smile - which was rather difficult, given that she hardly knew where its 'face' was ~ "Is there some reason that has caused you to have a change of heart?" |

A long silence preceded the ghostly echoes. Then again you heard in a lower tone, a different mood, your answer.
Echo "I am but an echo of a voice...a voice...voice..." "I do not have the ability to lie...to lie...lie..." "Your reward will be forthcoming on it's own, in time...in time...time..." "I have no heart...no heart...heart..." "I only serve the Voice...the Voice...Voice..." |
